Davis Mtn SP

Newbie here. Very nice site. My wife and I are heading to Davis Mtn SP at the end of February. Does anybody have any experience there that time of year. We will be pulling our travel trailer and travel from Tyler for our first long trip with the trailer. Looking forward to it. I read some good stuff on here about the Davis Mnts but was wondering what to expect with the weather in late February. Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: Davis Mtn SP

Sorry Haven't been there that time of year, one source of historical weather is

Weatherbase

type in fort davis texas and you can get a range.

Make sure you visit the McDonnald Observatory and take the hike to the fort if your in to hiking.

A number of State Parks sort of on the way but not much directly

we used the Midland RV campground (its on I-20) one of the ways, it was clean and easy on off. There is a KOA in Abeline if I recall also.

It could be quite blustery. Springtime in west Texas often brings very high winds: 60 mph common, occasionally in the 75 - 100 mph range. Not sure if they ever come as early as late Feb. I'm sure the park rangers could give you a good idea what to expect.

Welcome to the site!

Hope you have a great trip! We'd love to hear about it. Please post a trip report!

Re: Davis Mtn SP

Thanks for the replies JohnK and Troop198

I'm a little concerned about the winds but will check with the Park personel and the Weatherbase site to find out about the winds in late Feb.

I'll definitley post a report when we return.

Re: Davis Mtn SP

ok I'll try again
Davis Mnt SP great place

McDonald Observatory - Visitor information, teacher workshops, public programs - Fort Davis, Texas A must do, both the day time viewing and the star party when you can look through the scopes set up outside. Dress very warm. Check the schedule for dates.

The old fort is also well worth the time.

the park itself is nice, some of the better spots are off the full service loop if you have large tanks or a portable tote.
In town there is a nice grocery store and hardware store if needed. The drug store has a nice fountain good for a lunch.

Watch the Javalina, starting around dark, they will make the rounds from site to site looking for anything edible and will try to open anything they can. Be aware, not usually dangerous unless spooked, very near sighted, will practically bump into you before they know you are there. Have been known to try and eat yappy little dogs (not such a bad thing) large sharp tusks.

have a great time
jk

prepare for freezing temps, we have seen it down to 22" in Oct.
