Wow. Nice trip. I have attempted to write a report 3 times now. For whatever reason, most likely user error, I've managed to erase them or get a message that says I already logged in....so, this report is the cliff notes version.
Great park in the middle of no where. Great staff, loaned us an atlatl and spear to play with, took us on a hike, and showed us the longhorns. Drove to town to see museum in Quanah, and then in Vernon. Stopped at WalMart to develop pictures of staff playing with son to give them when we checked out.
Here is my plug for the park, if you have a church or scout group who would like to make a difference by doing a project (other than the usual of picking up trash), go to Copper Breaks and camp for the weekend. The group campsites are secluded atop some rocky outcroppings, overlooking a big pond. Some have dual picnic tables, all have a shade cover over the table. There is a group fire pit with enough cleared space around for numerous chairs. The restroom is at the top of the hill. Of course the water and electric sites were nice also, just not as scenic. The tee pee shaped table covers are in the water and electric sites. The bats enjoy them also. The project we saw was the amphitheatre was run down. Damaged in a storm a while back, it's a shame they don't use it anymore. It's a few yards down the hill from the main campground, protected somewhat by wind on 2 sides, and it overlooks the lake. What they need is a group of people with shovels to repair the trail, and water erosion logs/rocks, replace the broken benches, and an electrician to repair the lights for the pathway that look like they were crushed.
There is a lot of history in the park and the area and they love scout groups. To bad we live so far. Troop 198, how far is this park for ya'll?.....................
