It's an awesome park, indeed. We've gone there for daytrips anytime we're in that neck of the woods, and we've camped there once or twice (but it's been too long since our last campout.)
We went to Brazos Bend State Park on Sunday, after the rains came rumbling through. We always try to get to the park after the big rains because one time we went on a Monday holiday and there were probably 75 armadillos running around digging in the ground. Our Yorkies went crazy watching them and acting like they would run them down if they got the chance. Yeah, right! We did not see any armadillo action and did not see a gator either. We love the solitude of the park because is seems to go almost unnoticed by the masses. It does get busier on the weekends but still most campsites are available. We went bike riding with little to no road traffic to bother us or vice versa. We wished we could sneak in a camping trip but the rodeo is almost upon us so it will have to wait until late March or early April. We have several campsites with our names on it. This is (again) a perfect park for the beginner camper and the families with small children. Lots of shade, good trails, small amount of traffic. I wish we had been aware of this park when our kids were kids.

I agree...Brazos Bend is a great park. My family and I went there last April (and also visited the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Park which is not too far from Brazos Bend) not long before our move from Victoria to Helotes. We figured we had better see it before we moved to where the trip would be much further. Wished we had visited it more often and long before then...

Guess it's because I want water/electric sites, but I find I can hardly EVER get in on the weekends. I called oh, about 3 weeks ago, and the FIRST weekend they had available for Friday/Sat. night was in MARCH!! So if you want anything but a tent site -- reserve WAY in advance!!
You might try the Shelter area also. I have seen the campers there. It is not as wooded but still you have what you want and the latrine is still close by. We have gotten shelters very easily the last two times we tried. Just a suggestion.

Brazos Bend is awesome. Out of all the places in the Houston area, it is our favorite. We went in November, and we seen so much wildlife it was just unbelievable. We lost count after 16 alligators. It was a sunny day so they were basking, and they were just everywhere! It's a pretty quiet place, even on busy weekends.
We also love Brazos Bend and The George Observatory I think It was one of the best laid out parks in Texas. My son loves the gators and catching perch. We have had trouble gitting in at times ,but well worth the effort. We have'nt tried shelters yet, maybe before schools out.
