Brazos Bend SP- S. of Houston

This was a 2 day trip during spring break. The park hosts we met at Garner said they would be park hosting at BB during spring break so we should try getting a site there.

We arrived 9:30pm, and the park was packed. We only spotted 1 site. Guess that is our site. There are 2 sections of water/electric, the 100's and 200s. If you get to choose upon arrival, pick the 200's, it is more spread out. At night, the owls "who" you to sleep.

Since it was spring break they extended the nature center hours and hosted several programs each day. We attended a guided nature hike. I was so thrilled that, when asked, my 5 year old son could identify the tracks in the ground. I also got the skunk track question right. They read stories, showed bat videos, and had a snake presentation which was full when we arrived.

We hiked around 40 acre lake and saw lots of alligators, roseate spoonbills, cranes, ducks, and nutria. This place is great for nature photographers.

I highly reccomend this park if you have very young children. The hiking is not strenuous at all, and the nature center is something they enjoy seeing over and over again. ( anyone with kids knows how they can watch a video 50 times right?) Very educational and the staff accomodating. The bat video/presentation was held the day before we arrived. I asked about it and the man said he'd be happy to put it on the tv right there in the center for all to see. We sat on the bench and watched for a good 30 minutes.

We caught up with our park host friends and invited them for dinner. We had shrimp fettuchini alfredo and they provided the fresh baked cake. A feast by camping standards. We traded camping suggestions and dates when we would be different places. We plan to meet up in Nov.Dec at S. Llano ( they will be hosting there 2006).

Man, camping is fun.
