Blanco SP August 2009

Blanco almost went away before due to lack of use and now it may go away again. The severe drought has taken its toll on this nice little park. The park is located right on US 281 in Blanco, TX, it has 10 full hookup sites and 21 w & E sites, 7 shelters and it no longer has swimming. A ranger noted one spring is completely gone. The park was about half full, mostly in the full hookup area thought.

Terrible. I thought that Big Pond at Copper Breaks was bad when we were there in April. It looked like it was about half as full as when we were there in April 2008 but it is nothing like that. It's fortunate there haven't been wildfires all throughout the Hill Country.

Holy Moly! I've seen that park in bad shape as far as the river goes but never THAT bad. Man, we need rain in the worst way and lots of it!

That's awful. Do you really think they are in danger of closing? It's a favorite winter spot for us.

Sorry pure speculation on my part. No one said that ! It had more people that Lost Maples and Guadelupe SP. Then again, those are in a dry area also right now.

I figured the water was the big draw, not the location.
Being right next to 281 I thought it might be loud at night. Is it?

No,. actually, it's quite nice. We love that place. It;s not far from town ( if you want to call it that! ha ha) and their is a grocery store just a few minutes away. We have a good time every time we go.

Re: Blanco SP August 2009

It is sad to see that river totally dried up. I wonder if it has ever been that bad in recent years. We were at Copper Breaks for Spring break and were told that their dam has a hole in it and even if there was enough rain up there, they couldn't allow the pond to fill until the repair was made. To top it off, they had just gotten a new floating fishing pier and had installed it the week before we arrived. It wasn't floating at all, it was a good 20 feet from the edge of the water.

I've been trying to treat water the way you have to out west, like at Big Bend. I can't say I've been hyper diligent, but I'm changing my mind-set and that can take a while. Like, hand washing, you only need a little water and toilet flushing. Heck, I've already saved a ton of water by letting my grass go brown. On our water bill they calculate a winter average. Anything over that average is considered for outdoor watering. My water used this past July was 2,993 gallons less that my winter average. Now I can't take the credit for using that much less, we were in Colorado for two weeks and we have one less adult here now..............Oh, I've figured out the water shortage, we all need to go camping out of state!

I've never seen it so dry. We fished there this spring when it still had water.

Re: Blanco SP August 2009

Well, there is no water in the river but maybe there is something else to draw tourists to the area.
