Big Bend info

I'm heading to Big Bend over the Christmas holidays and was wondering if anyone knows of any pictograph / petroglyph sites. I've seen the pictographs by the hot springs. I've heard about a pictograph of a red buffalo. Can anyone help me out? Thanks. Ric

I don't know about pictograph / petroglyph sites at Big Bend, but I notice you are from Houston, so you may be taking highway 90 to get to Big Bend. If you do, you might consider a stop at Seminole Canyon SP just west of Comstock. There is some interesting art work there.

Yep...the Hwy 90 route is a great one. We always use that route on our out-bound trips to Big Bend. If you do take Hwy 90 and have some time, head across the border to Acuna and eat at Crosby's Restaurant. Great food. (George Strait mentions Ma Crosby's in his song "Blame it on Mexico").

There are some little pictographs at the Hot Springs area before you get to the Rio Grande area, if my memory serves correctly. I found this article online that you might find interesting: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/...qi3_print.html

I forgot to mention in my other post...you may also want to post your question on BigBendChat.com. That website is dedicated to just Big Bend and has many avid Big Benders posting on it.

Re: Big Bend info

Thanks for the info. Our last trip out to BB, we came back 90 all the way to Langtry. We headed north from there and took a back road that criss crossed the Devils River numerous times. It was very scenic and also challenging since the rains had swelled the river. We've also been to Sabinal Canyon SP and have seen the pictographs there. Unfortunately, due to the distance and shortage of time, we usually head out west via I-10 to get to the good stuff in BB.

Re: Big Bend info

Forgot to mention this...but there are petroglyphs on the rock formations known as the Chimneys. You can hike to the Chimneys from Ross Maxwell Drive. The trailhead is clearly marked and there is a parking area to pull off the road. The trail is fairly well marked, but you do need to keep your eyes out for the rock cairns. The Chimneys can be seen from the trailhead (with Kit Mountain off to your left) which makes it a deceiving hike. You think it is a really short one...but it is 2.4 miles to the Chimneys. This hike is best done in the cooler months, as you are in the desert. But, even at this time of the year or in December, bring plenty of water. You cannot hydrate enough out there. The hike is a good one.

Also, when you get to the park, check with the rangers at Panther Junction. They can also point you to the locations of rock art (plus share other items with you on the park).
