My wife and kids and I just got back from a five day backcountry camp at Big Bend. I have been to 28 states and lived in Alaska, however, I have never been to such a wondrous place. The landscape is so diverse, I can't believe it took me (a native Texan) 29 years to finally get here! If you have never been to Big Bend, you must go! It cannot be described in words or appreciated in the best of photographs, it must be experienced. If you are from Texas, you cannot achieve true Texanhood until you make a pilgrimage to Big Bend, and meet Willie Nelson, of course.

It took "my Justin" and I 28 and 31 years, respectively, to make the pilgrimage to Big Bend National Park, and we returned just as awe-inspired as you clearly were. Big Bend's a place I hope to return to several times in my lifetime. We were there for a week in October 2001 and it was such an amazing trip, I'm still trying to compile my trip report for the 6 days we were there...so far, I only have the first two days documented... well, that and 150+ photos which I posted immediately upon our return.

I hear Guadalupe Mountains and Franklin Mountains are well worth visiting, as well. Actually, I've yet to find anywhere that ISN'T worth visiting in Texas, and that would be my blessing as well as my curse.
