I'd like to do a short (2 nite) camping trip to somplace that allows tent camping directly on the beach. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

To Camp or Not to Camp -Lets go Camping- Have Fun
When we were at Martin Dies, Jr. State Park earlier this year we drove down through Port Arthur and Sabine Pass to check out the gulf. There were a couple of tents set up on the beach in the McFaddin National Wildlife Reserve. We talked to one group and they said it was free to camp, no permit needed. It would be great this time of year with the cool constant breeze coming off the water (keeps the mosquitoes away, too).
Does anyone know the rules of camping on the beach when it's a river or lake? I seem to remember reading that the beaches of any river in Texas are part of the river, not belonging to any adjacent landowner. If this is true, then can you camp alongside any river where there is an actual beach?
Padre Island National Seashore is certainly an option for camping directly on the beach. Ideally you'd have a 4x4-enabled vehicle to handle any soft sand and to allow you to explore some of the more desolate, crowd-less areas (if solitude's your game).
