Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

Jamie, The water level stays pretty constant by the dam. There is a new rope in one of the trees across from rock beach. When we were there, last week, there were tons of people swinging on the ropes and jumping out of the trees. Just check the water level if you plan to do any swingin' or jumping off rocks anywhere else. Go have fun, hopefully it will rain before you leave.

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

We just got back yesterday from the Frio and it was nice. We missed the weekend crowds by getting to the area on Sunday afternoon. We visited Garner several times but stayed at Camp Liveoak, an old family resort. It actually started up many years ago even before Garner. We had a nice part of the river to play just by our selves. But now about Garner, it was very quiet, many or most sites were available just before school let out. Bike riding was a pleasure with the almost empty park. The water is low, not much floating right now but that can change with the next rain. There are bunches of places to just play in the river and stay cool. We saw so many deer on this trip, more than usual. At Camp Liveoak we saw so many birds that it kept me busy just watching them. They have so many painted buntings and indigo buntings it was truly a show to watch. We plan on making another visit later in the summer if we can get away again. By the way, the dance was canceled until last night because there was not enough people to have one but I'm sure that it is full swing now. Also, they have a burn ban but we had small campfires several evenings. I wish the days had gone by slower but we will go again, to be sure.

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

The Yorkies did great. They are real troopers. The life jackets worked great. Someone said they looked like little nutria (?) swimming in the river. The water was great and the humidity was very tolerable, very unlike Alvin Texas in early June.

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

Oh, man...I had to cancel my Garner trip for the 9-12 due to car repair bills ((sigh)). But at least we still have them booked for August, so it's not a total washout. :P

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

Well,
After much debate we opted to change our reservations to a little bit closer to home. We are heading out to Lake Somerville for two nights. I really wanted to head to Garner, but after last years premium conditions and perfect tubing to compare it to, I would rather pass and try for a trip later in the summer after some rain. Hope anyone that ventures out that way has a blast!

Not a bad decision. The Frio is fun, but when you spend more time wading than floating, it tends to lessen the enjoyment. As cost rise, we all will want to maximize the enjoyment level of our recreational dollars. We started our camping experiences decades ago at Welch park at Somerville. Lots of good memories. Enjoy your time

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

Oh, my! Just got back from Garner yesterday. What fun! We tubed just from the Pavillion to the rope swings and it took about 1.5 hours. That long because son was being the 'motor' and had to stop every so often to play.

Son 'discovered' the dances. He's 11. The last night he danced with 6 girls -- 3 15-year-olds. I am NOT ready for this--LOL! The river was cold & clear.

As usual, can't WAIT to go back!

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

Good for you happybooker1, my son and his family just got back yesterday and had a great time also. I recieved several Iphone pictures while they were there. Water was lower than everyone wanted but the many water pictures I got looked like everyone was still enjoying the great Frio. Got dance pictures of nine year old grandson and eight year old granddaughter dancing together. Great memories, low water or not.

Re: 1st trip to Garner coming up

I'm waiting for a return posting from Campin_family, wanted to see if Garner camping fit the bill for them. You know....inquiring minds and all that stuff.
