Wireless Amber Alerts

With all of us travelling and on-the-go, often with a cellular phone in tow, I wanted to share a new service provided by most of the nation's cellular phone carriers -- Wireless Amber Alerts The link goes to a lookup form that determines if your cellular phone number supports the alerts, and if it does, allows you to sign up for them. We're on Cingular Wireless in San Antonio and our network supports them, though I haven't validated if they're FREE yet. I've emailed Cingular's CSRs for a "yay" or "nay".

You can read more here (CNN, via the Associated Press): Cell phones can now receive Amber Alerts

Re: Wireless Amber Alerts

Cingular responded to my inquiry. AMBER Alerts cannot be received free of charge on Cingular telephones (unless, I assume, your plan has free text messaging.) The plan Justin and I share, however, charges us $0.10 for every text message sent or received on our Cingular cellular phones.

Just wanted to update folks -- it's unlikely to get expensive if an AMBER Alert actually is released in one of the 5 ZIP codes you're permitted to receive alerts for. And if one person's text message receipt leads to a tip or end of an abduction, that's a small price to pay, IMHO.
