Where to go canoeing/backpacking from San Antonio - Wild Texas Forums: Parks, Travel & Recreation

I will be attending a conference in San Antonio with a friend from Canada end of Feb. We are hoping to take a day or two to go canoeing (prefer rivers to lakes) but will only have one vehicle so would need to rent, most likely use an outfitter which could do drop off and pick up. Canyon of Eagles looks nice but is a bit of a drive for a day or two of canoeing. (~12 mile/day route would be ideal). Something much closer to San Antonio would be best to allow more canoeing time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I live in San Antonio and would be willing to work with you.. I have a 17ft. canoe and camping gear..

I am not an outfitter, however if I can help you and make a few dollars off of my gear...

Near San Antonio I would recommend the Gualalupe River, look at the maps (Topozone.com) for a place 12 miles up from the state park (I forget the name at the moment) There are not sandbars and most properties are posted so you will need to overnight at the park.

I am willing to drop you off and pick you up as needed.

You might want to check out potential portage points along the San Marcos River, including Palmetto State Park in Gonzales, Texas. As another person noted, the Guadalupe River's a good, navigable river in the area as well; it, too, has a part that provides access (Guadalupe River State Park), though there might be better portage points.
