Thumbs up Sorry! Gotta' Brag About My Grandson!!!

Well, I had to take the time to brag about my 13 year old grandson (GS) and what a great job he did at handling a medical emergency. Seems he and his other grandpa were taking the old guys 30’ “tag-along” out to one of the local parks. Gramps got to driving real slow and weaving a bit. When GS asked him what was going on, gramps stated he wasn’t feeling well at all. GS got him to pull over and then had to order him to put the truck in “park” and turn the engine off. About that time, gramps’ eyes rolled back in his head and that was the end of him for a while.

GS got on the “cell” and called “911” to get the ball rolling. He then called his aunt and got her on the way. Paramedics showed up and while seeing to the medical needs of his grandpa, GS also saw to the security and transportation of the old boy’s truck and trailer!!! By the time his aunt arrived, grandpa had been transported to the hospital and the truck and trailer had also been moved there and secured. This was all arranged under the watchful eye of my GS with no one else around to direct his actions or decisions. Didn’t he do well?

Oh, and the cause of the emergency? The old boy had AGAIN failed to see that he ate correctly. Not a good idea for an insulin dependent diabetic. He went into insulin shock and the doctor said he was well on his way to a coma. This is not the first time that this has happened and I really wonder why my SIL lets my grandchildren ride with him. Yes, I know what I should say and have before. At some point, there is nothing more you can do but worry, even as a grandparent. None the less, I am very proud of my grandson and wanted to brag about him a bit. Thanks for letting me and,

Happy Camping!

Hug your grandson extra close the next time you get an opportunity and tell him how proud you are of his actions. It speaks highly of his character and thought processes under pressure--there are adults who fall to pieces in similar circumstances!

As for the "adult" in the situation, he needs to get his act together because it's not just his life he's taking into his own hands, it's his loved one's and potentially a stranger and their family on the highways and byways.

I totally agree with what Shannon and srds has said!

And you DO deserve to brag on your grandson's calm & collected actions. Heck, I am proud of him for you, Turn Key - and I don't even know him! lol

I am just happy to hear that all is turning out well for everyone involved. It could have turned out so much worse, very quickly!

Blessings,
Cheyenne

Wow Turnkey. That's awesome. Is that the same grandson we met 2 summers ago @ Dinosaur Valley? Sometimes we try to teach our kids something and wonder if they really "heard the message." He heard the first aid talk loud and clear. Great clear thinking, responsibility, compassion, and maturity. You deserve to be a proud grampa.

Shannon, I understand from my daughter that he came a little unhinged AFTER all was over and taken care of. Can't blame him there.

Re: Sorry! Gotta' Brag About My Grandson!!!

I am so glad it didn't turn out worse. I saw in the news today about a semi truck going about 24 miles the wrong way on the interstate. The driver's family said he was likely in diabetic coma or something along those lines.

My father is diabetic and while he takes a lot of care in taking care of himself - I schooled my kids, even the 7 and 6 year old about diabetes and what to look for. They are with my parents 1 or both often, at least every other week. My dad always has snacks on him, but even the kids carry them with them when they are in the car with him. You never know. My dad showed up out of the blue on Monday to deliver clothes they bought them over the weekend (my dad lives in West Tx and drove in to San Antonio). He wanted to take the kids to SAMs and load them up on their favorite junk food and snacks. Before the last kid walked out the door, he grabbed a pack of peanut butter crackers.

I am so glad to hear is calm under pressure. That is me to a T including the breaking down afterwards. I hope I can be so proud when it is my turn to be a grandparent.
