Post Labor Day School Start Date

Just wanted to let everyone know that the TTIA is behind the legislation to mandate a school start date after Labor Day. I know that lots of people grew up with a post-Labor Day start date, but this should be left in the hands of the local communities, not the state and definitely not the tourism industry. Believe me, if we have extra time off in August, you sure won't find my family visiting Six Flags or the Riverwalk in 100 degree heat...we'll be on a plane to Canada or Maine or the Pacific northwest.

We typically take a summer vacation, a spring break vacation and sometimes a Thankgiving week vacation. If this bill passes, we will only take one vacation a year. How does THAT help Texas tourism?

I agree with your sentiments. Do these legislators have rocks in their heads? What makes them experts on education issues? It just shows where their priorities reside and it's certainly not with education.

Do they still get out in May???
Is the tourist industry pushing this and if so why? Seems cooler months would be better for all but the rivers?
Running for school board and am learning much about the system that scares the hell out of me. but, I have never liked government in my life which is why I left Massachusettes 28 years ago. Problem is we are following suit. Just a few years slower

No, this will push the end of the school year into June. Tell me that makes sense. The local districts should make the decision on their own school calendar. The state can't even decide on funding education and now they want to dabble in the local's calendar??

Someone asked if they had rocks in their head and why they thought they knew anything about education policy! Shame on you! Send your apologies to the rocks immediately! Earth Science and the Rock Cycle are my favorite units to teach. I am very offended.

Now seriously. Let's all take a deep breath and say "TTTAAAAKKKSSS Testing" together. That should effectively answer above.

Oh and just forget about kids heading off to some amusement park in late August. How bout a week vacation with Dad in JANUARY because MOM will have me during SPRING BREAK. OR, I asked my mom to let me sleep in (and the kid missed 2 days) OR, 2 weeks to Europe in MAY because we will be on a CRUISE the REST OF THE SUMMER! OR "I forgot what my dad wrote on the note." Parents are just as much to blame for their child's lack of learning when attendance is so optional.

Don't get so excited yet. Even with the push for post Labor Day start times, the school district that my kids attend (Clear Creek ISD) is starting on the earliest day yet, Aug. 10. They go until May 23.

BTW, I graduated high school in 1981 and we always started in August... never had a post Labor Day start.
