Little Trip
Hi.... My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Fort Worth this July. I am from Ohio and have never been to Texas, and was wondering if anybody could give me some can't miss things to see and do around that area. A day trip would be ok, but we will only be in the state for a few days. Thanks for your info!

Re: Little Trip
Be sure an bring plenty of sun screen and cool clothing. Ft. Worth is mighty warm in July. BTW what sort of activities are you looking for?

Re: Little Trip
I have heard plenty about the heat...but I think I can deal with it. I know we are planning on going to Billy Bob's Texas, and I know I would like to see the desert if at all possible. But aside from that I have no idea what to do.

What you see depends on how much time you have and how much you want to drive. I'm not sure how much success you'll have with reaching the "desert" -- depends on your definition of a desert, I guess. Big Bend National Park is in West Texas and comprises part of the Chihuahuan Desert; Amarillo (more than 6 hours drive from Fort Worth) is home to Palo Duro Canyon which is desert-like in is stark vegetation and scenery... but I'm not aware of any (scenic) desert closer to Fort Worth.
I had to look up what Billy Bob's Texas is -- aha, world's largest honky tonk ( http://www.billybobstexas.com/). If entertainment's your fare, I hear there's great shopping and dining in Fort Worth (the same is true for Dallas).

Re: Little Trip
Make sure you visit downtown Ft. Worth. The Sundance Square area is a great place to shop and there are a plethora(sp) of nice dining establishments there. Also the Bass performance hall is there which is great.

Re: Little Trip
I've been wondering what visitors from Ohio might enjoy. There's a spring-fed swimming hole (commercial) in Ft. Worth called Burger's Lake that's a good place to cool off. The Fort Worth Nature Reserve off Jacksboro Highway on the northwest side of town is one of my favorites. You might try coming out my way and see Dinosaur Valley State Park - I don't think it would be worth the drive unless you stopped for bar-b-q'd brisket and a Dairy Queen Blizzard in Glen Rose. And my home town, Granbury, has a quaint old town square because they were too poor to tear it down and build new stuff back in the day.
Enjoy the visit - there's lots of air conditioning.

Re: Little Trip
Great ones, "toejam"! Hadn't thought of them! Outstanding places! Use to fish for crappie off Greer Island at the nature center when I lived on the north side of Ft. Worth. That was back in the days when you could enter the center from the south end, right after crossing over the Lake Worth bridge. Great place.
