I'm new here

Hi everyone,

My name is Virginia and I've been into hiking and backpacking off and on for the last three years. At one point last year I was backpacking up to three times a month and filling in the rest of my time hiking or gardening and taking care of a busy family.

I love the Texas hill country and have hiked many trails and back packed in many places as well. There are still LOTS of places I haven't been to yet but intend to check out eventually.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to hike or back pack in months and am getting terribly out of shape. It will be December before I can seriously do either again and hope to find an exceptional partner by that time. In the meantime I am trying to grab a hike here and there and hopefully not get so out of shape I'm starting at ground zero again.

I look forward to lurking around on the boards and hope to meet some nice people. If you visit my blog and go into the archives you can see photos and read trip reports from many of the places I've hiked or backpacked in the last three years.

Cheers,
Virginia

Re: I'm new here

Welcome aboard, Virginia! Don't backpack but do enjoy the Texas Hill Country as many here do. Hope you can find a partner and you have a great time here.

Happy Camping!

Re: I'm new here

Welcome to WildTexas.com -- we're thrilled to have you!

I can relate to being out of the saddle, as it were, since I haven't been back on a bicycle in over a year (cause: pregnancy and a gorgeous but active 6.5-month-old, now!) nor have I been tent camping or serious hiking in quite awhile.

Anyway, you've come to the right place and I hope you get some great ideas, backpacking friends and inspiration from your visits here to WildTexas.

I'm new also.

I'm new also to this site.
Have been camping for 20 yrs. in fact we for sure go once a month and here in the fall we are scheduled for everyother weekend. Live in Houston so we try to stay with-in 2-3 hrs of home. Have not been west of San A. or Austin.
I just know it is hard to find a 'public' spot with very little notice. Books up fast.

Re: I'm new here

There are some very nice places to camp around the Austin area within in a hundred miles or so. Lost Maples is a sweet place to backpack and stay a night. Hill Country State Natural Area is another nice spot for both backpacking and car camping.

I really loved Garner SP! The trails were awesome and when I was camping there with a good friend we practically had the place to ourselves. The timing was impeccable!

I don't know if I have a favorite or not. Each trip I've taken has been cool in some way or another...whether it be animal encounters, or places filled up with wildflowers, or interesting weather, I've enjoyed them all. I can imagine that if I ever make it to places like the Guadalupe Mountains, or Big Bend I'd dub them favs.

But for now, I think Lost Maples, the primitive campsites along the GoodWater Trail, and Hill Country State Natural area are amongst my local favorites. And by local I mean within 150 miles or so of Austin.

If a place offers quiet solitude and animals I generally like it.
