Hopeful Newbie

Hi to All!
I am hoping you friendly Texans can give me some input. I am moving from Mexico to Texas. Why Texas??? I have found Texans to be very friendly. I have pretty well decided on the Athens area. Before I get to my question I should tell you about myself. I am a retired woman that loves the outdoors. I am looking for lakes and stream for fishing, kayaking, camping, just about anything outdoors. I am also searching for others who enjoy the same activities.
What do you all think? Am I on the right track here? I welcome any advise or comments. Thanks for any and all comments. Deb

Well you are in the right place to find other campers and outdoor folks. In addition your choice of the Athens area put you close to a variety of choices.
Welcome to this happy band of campers

Re: Hopeful Newbie

Welcome and hope you like it here. The Athens area should be good..it is centeral area...maybe 2hrs to some other great areas. You'll just have to watch and not go North to Canton on the first Monday of every month. It has one of the Biggest flea markets in Texas and traffic get's really backed up. I've heard from other campers that Tyler St. park is one of the nicest and there is the railroad (http://www.texasstaterr.com/ ) in Rusk that always has something going on. There is a Fiddlers / bluegrass festivel just north of Tyler two times a year and herd it is slap your leg...Fun.....Enjoy.

Re: Hopeful Newbie

Thanks for all the friendly replies! I am busy here in Mexico trying to get things organized. Meanwhile I am also getting myself familiar with the rules and regs for fishing. The biggest obstacle I have hit so far is getting my truck permited. I donīt have any current registration and that has become a problem. I canīt register it here in Mexico because it was manufactured in Japan. I canīt reregister it from Calif unless I drive it there....hopefully I receive some good news from DOT telling me I can get a temporary permit. It still looks like January before I can actually make the move. Really looking forward to it.

What about just renting a truck/car? Don't let your camping trip become a pain, save the hassle for another time.

Re: Hopeful Newbie

I would rent if I was just coming for a camping trip. I am moving to Texas so the truck needs to come with me. I am looking forward to many camping trips once I get settled in.

Well, I have to say, while Texas is great, pretty much anywhere is better than Mexico. I lived there for 2 years for distance learning in college and it was miserable. So I welcome you to Texas with open arms!

Re: Hopeful Newbie

I have given it almost 5 years and I can say I love the weather, otherwise it is Godīs waiting room or a bar stool for most people around here. Thanks for the welcome. January seems so far away!!!

Re: Hopeful Newbie

Where in Mexico?

I worked in Reynosa, so I can only speak for that area.

OTOH, the people were among the friendliest I'd ever met.
