Hill Country Road Trip

The wife and I plus some in-laws are driving to San Antonio next weekend from Houston. We'll visit Lost Maples, if we can get in, and then on to Fredericksburg. The focus is to meander in the hill country and see some different scenery from our accustomed coastal prairie. Shannon mentioned the drive to Leakey was pretty also. Might try to fit that in as well.

I forgot to pose my question. If anyone has any additional thoughts on scenic destinations in this area, I'd like to consider them. Thanks

That is a very beautiful part of the Hill Country. I would suggest taking Highway 16 north out of S.A. through Bandera into Medina. Then 337 west from Medina to Vanderpool, which is another very beautiful road. Then from Vanderpool 187 north to 39 east, until Ingram where you could take 27 south/east to Kerrville, from there taking highway 16 north to Fredericksburg.

I've done most roads out in that area and I'd have to say 337 and 16 (especially between Bandera and Fredericksburg) are two of the most beautiful. Well, have fun!

Oceanus,
Thanks for your input. We did travel Hwy 16 from San Antonio to Fredericksburg. The weather played a big part in our view of the scenery---low hanging clouds with misty rain. Stopped in cowboy town (Bandera) where the women did the shops. On through Medina to Kerrville (a very pretty stretch) to Fredericksburg. The women continued to shop but I dropped (into the winery). Took some mental notes for possibly doing the wild thing (backpacking) next spring or fall.
