Hi. New guy here...

Hello. My name is David. I just registered as a new member today (July 13). I grew up in south Louisiana. My father, brother, and I were very serious Texas deer hunters when I was growing up. We also Bass fished whenever and wherever we could. I moved to Texas Hill Country about 3 years ago, but unfortunately, I have no place to go hunting now. I still try to fish when I can, but do that when I go back to Louisiana to visit my family.

I must say that this website is very fascinating and interesting! I recently started getting interested in camping. My two young daughters and one son have been asking for a couple years to go camping, so I started doing the research this summer. When my wife found out I was doing this research, she surprised me and bought quite a bit of camping gear for me! So, I'm excited and anxious to get started! However, I'm not the type that will just start doing something without researching it. Even though I'm planning to make my first camping experience as a tent camping outing at Hill Country State Natural Area, I still am looking forward to any information that anyone can give to rookie campers, by car or tent. I'm hoping to start backpack in a few years.

Well, I hope I've said enough in this introduction. I look forward to meeting new friends and teachers on this forum!

Welcome aboard to Wild Texas!

When do you plan your trip to Hill Country SNA? It can be quite hot out there since there isn't abundant shade. It's a wonderful place to get away, especially if you reserve one of the backcountry campsites.

For tent camping, in the summer in Texas, in short words it will be hot. One of the best lists of everthing possible is at

add a camera

Saying that its fun for families and memories both of fun and sometimes the rain

Re: Hi. New guy here...

Shannon and Troop198, thank you so much for responding! For someone who has never used a forum before, it's easier than I thought!

For sure, I plan to camp at Hill Country SNA (among others) this coming fall and winter, but I may go sooner. Yes, its cooler, but I'm more interested in seeing Whitetail deer during this season. I have studied them in the past and find that this period observes the most interesting behavior.

Troop198, thank you very much for that website. It'll help a ton!

Re: Hi. New guy here...

David,

Welcome to WildTexas!

Hill Country SNA is an awesome place to go for a more authentic camping experience. Since it is a State Natural Area versus a State Park it generally has less creature comforts.

It is an awesome place to do some hiking and mountain biking. The park is just such a great representative of many of the qualities that make the Texas Hill Country such a popular place.

Here are a few photos from a great mountain biking adventure Shannon and I had there several years ago.

How did you manage to get out of Louisiana and into Texas? That's what I want to do, but I've not yet figured out how to accomplish it!

Re: Hi. New guy here...

Welcome David! This is a wonderful forum and everyone is very helpful! I am on the Gulf Coast but LOVE to camp in the Piney Woods. The heat can be a bit much but you can cheat like we do by bringing along a portable AC or installing one of the AC boots that is mentioned in the Camping forum and using just a standard window unit. Happy camping!

Re: Hi. New guy here...

Hi Dave, and welcome! My DH is from north LA (Shreveport) and got here as fast as he could too!

Does the wife know just how primitive HCSNA is? Just make sure you share your research with her. I have a thing about decent bathrooms, so we pretty much limit ourselves to the state parks, but that's just me. I like to have water and electric hookups too. Not exactly roughing it, but I gotta have my DVD player, a good movie, and a cocktail when the kids go to bed!

We also take the hottest summer months off from camping. Just can't deal with it. When my youngest gets older and we can spend the worst part of the day in the water, we'll resume. Someday we'll get a pop-up. Although this year has been so mild and wet, you never know what you'll get around here. We just got back from Port Aransas and it rained the WHOLE time. 3 hours of beach time out of 4 days. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY!!!!!

Glad you joined and have fun exploring the site!
