Hello

Just found this site this morning. Hope to use it a lot.

I'm 35, married and have a 3 1/2 year old daughter. My wife is a native Texan. I'm an Air Force brat so I've lived everywhere, but no longer than 3 years at a place until I got to Dallas about 10 years ago.

We were not a camping family growing up but I always wanted to get into it. I quit drinking on March 23, 2006 and I got an unexpected bonus of $500.00 about 2 months ago and spent it all on camping gear of which we had none. We do some volksmarching but as a family are pretty new to the hiking and camping.

Went on our first camping trip as a family over the weekend. The only temper tantrum thrown was when we were packing up the tent to come home yesterday. I promised my wife and the baby the next time we go I won't throw a fit when it is time to come home.

We plan on meeting some friends in June at either Enchanted Rock or Bastrop State Park but we will try and get out at least once more before then.

I'm new to these forums but have been an avid poster on fantasy football forums since 1998 so I'll do my best to fit in and not step on anyone's toes.

Re: Hello

Welcome aboard.
I don't expect you will step on anyone's toes around here. A lot of friendly, good natured folks who enjoy camping. Investing in camping gear is an investment in the family. Not a bad investment in my opinion. Some one on here probably can answer any question you might have, back packing to rv'ing.

Re: Hello

Welcome aboard and I hope you find what you need here. This is not the busyest 'board on the web but it is one of the best when it comes to info on Texas. If you can't find what you need via a "search", post a question and you can bet one of the members will have the answer you need.

Have visited both Enchanted Rock and Bastrop. Both are nice and have their points. Be aware that Enchanted Rock has no sites with "power & water". There is water available but the park is best suited for tent campers rather then those with RVs. It is my understanding that the camping sites that they do have are just a concession and the state would prefer that there were no camping to preserve the area.

Bastrop is also nice with some well shaded sites. Some sites tend to be a bit small for RVs but would be fine for tent campers. Have thought about a trip there but it just hasn't happened yet.

Hope this helps and again, welcome to Wild Texas. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Happy Camping!

Re: Hello

Both parks offer a variety of terrain and landscape. I'd camp at Bastrop. It's shady and the showers have doors! Enchanted is scenic from the top, but the camp sites seem on top of each other, and you need to walk past each other to get to the nice ones along the back, (where you back up against the rock). I thought it looked nice that we might go camp it sometime when the weather was perfect, but when we did a restroom inspection, no shower doors or curtain, some things NEED to be kept private, :eek:to rustic for me. Bastrop offers cabins, W/E sites, tent only, and primitive. There is a pool and a nice playground.

I have also experienced those tantrums. We call it the "Back to reality melt-down". You know how it feels, you begin to recall all the stuff waiting for you to do at home, and at work........it just makes you want to cry when you drive out the front gate of the park. It's really over. The weekend is really over. Why can't I just call in sick? Why am I not retired yet? I don't want to go home. Why do I have to drive? Who is going to help me unload the truck? What do you mean you have to go to the bathroom!?............
