Heading to Dallas

We are heading to Dallas (Grapevine) for the weekend30/1 with family. We don't plan on spending the whole weekend with them. Is there something we should try to see or do while we are there? My mother in law, will be with me and kiddo.

Re: Heading to Dallas

Well if you are going to be in Grapevine that puts you near the middle of the metro mess, and puts everything in Fort Worth and Dallas as possible venues to visit. Any help in narrowing down the list: historical sites, museums, parks, shopping?

Re: Heading to Dallas

In Fort Worth the Museum of Science and History has really cool - and interactive - Star Wars Exhibit that just opened this month. My husband and I went a week ago and will probably be taking our grandson back with us next time. There is also the Omni Theater (Imax) in the museum and the other standard exhibits. These days any admission tickets include the Cowgirl Hall of Fame Museum which is located right across the street. Visit the site for more info www.fwmuseum.org

There is also the Tarantula Train Ride. Making frequent runs between the city of Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards, the Tarantula Train gives people the chance to ride the rails just like the old days. The train's pulling turn-of-the-century Victorian coaches and open-air patio cars are pulled along over 21 miles of track by "Puffy," a restored 1896 steam locomotive. Both one way and round trips are available on the Tarantula Train and snacks and drinks are available on board so that you can enjoy the ride even more. For more info www.gvrr.com

The Fort Worth Zoo has been rated one of the top 10 in the nation. For more info www.fortworthzoo.com

I try to stay WEST of the Trinity River and not venture into Dallas unless I have to. However, if decide to be brave and head that way then I suggest The Dallas World Aquarium. It is the most impressive indoor Rainforest exhibit I have ever seen and the aquariums from the 7 oceans are really neat. For more info www.dwazoo.com

Have fun!

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to imply that Dallas was bad. I don't think Dallas is bad , its just not Fort Worth! We have popular BBQ place next the Cultural District that sells T-Shirts that has their logo on the front and "Life's too short to live in Dallas" on the back. My main aversion to Dallas is just the traffic. That's why I don't go that way unless I have to ..... And even then I try to take the TRE instead of driving.

Re: Heading to Dallas

Dallas traffic is bad!
You have to time it just right! Normally drive on the highways after 10am until 3pm. After that it's rush hour! Then go back out after 7pm.

There are a lot of nice restaurants near the Grapevine outlet mall.
Are you taking kids?

Sandy Lake has a HUGE pool!

Re: Heading to Dallas

We arrived in Bedford about 7pm,checked in, grabbed some travel brochures, got dinner, and went to bed. The purpose of the trip was to meet up with my mother in law's sister whom she hasn't seen in about 15 years who was staying at the Gaylord for a conference. We met her for breakfast, then returned to the resort. Let me tell you how much I LOVE valet parking. Once inside, the ladies find a quiet cafe to sit and catch-up so kiddo and I take off to see the hotel. What a place. It was so nicely landscaped inside, the staff so pleasant, and everything so clean and beautiful. We even snagged a few grapes from the vines outside the Hill Country atrium.

We left there to visit the National Scouting Museum in Irving. Since my son is a Wolf and I am his den leader, it was a great place to visit. Since we had just an hour left, the lady didn't charge us which was extra nice. My mother in law spend 30 minutes in the Norman Rockwell Art Gallery, while we got straight back to the car track, shooting gallery, and bike-video games. After completing a trivia test, my so received a belt loop for his advancement belt, and a ribbon to go on our pack's flag ( which is a very cool thing).

The horse statues of Las Colinas were about 5 minutes away so we drove over to see them. I used to be addicted to horses and competing but I've been sober for 8 years now ( son is 7.....). It was a treat for me. My son just liked running around and leaping over the water.

This morning we had breakfast at the Gaylord, then returned to San Antonio via Forth Worth, stopping at the Stockyard for a little more than an hour. We took pictures with the Indian man and the Longhorn, and ate lunch at Risky's. Then the storm came. It was already dark as we left the restraunt, but the wind picked up, then lightening was close so we high tailed it to the truck parked 5 minutes down the street.

I would have liked to spend more time at the Stockyard, at the Scouting museum, and actually stayed at the Gaylord. Maybe next lifetime.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We would have done more if the ladies didn't have so much to catch up on. As the official chauffer, we couldn't just take off and leave her.

Re: Heading to Dallas

Traffic wasn't much of a problem as the infrastructure. I guess it's a little to upscale for us as we were easily confused about HWY 121. Why don't they use the same road number til the end of it? We went in circles a lot. Once you're on the ramp, it's a while til the next exit to turn around. We actually hit slower traffic in Austin at 3pm Friday afternoon than 5:30pm in Fort Worth. One saving grace is the tourism signs for Bass Pro, the Mills, the Gaylord etc. It's like here in SA. I never drive DT except when guests come and want to see the Alamo. I just get on the freeway which goes DT, then follow the signs. Here's your sign.
