Thumbs up Halloween 2009 fun at the parks

Some of the events found at the parks activities page All are subject to weather

October 24, 2009 — Purtis Creek SP — Halloween Carnival — Bring the family for a hauntingly good time at the carnival with activities, games and prizes. Take a hayride to the campground then trick or treat at the campsites marked with orange pumpkins. 6-10 p.m.; tickets 25 cents for games, 50 cents for hayride, park entrance fee waived for those participating in the Halloween events. October 31, 2009 — Lake Somerville SP & Trailway/Birch Creek Unit — Hallows Eve Hike — Come join us for a spookily good time on our Hallows Eve Trail. After completing the tormenting trek, you will be greeted by a park ranger telling ghost stories around the campfire. Appropriate for ages 6 and up. Dusk-eerily dark; fee $1 per person (979) 535-7763

October 31, 2009 — Ray Roberts Lake SP/Isle du Bois Unit — Halloween Night Hike — Wear your costumes to this first-ever event! We'll cruise around looking for creepy crawlies and listening for spooky sounds. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes; bring insect repellant and a flashlight. Accessible for the hearing impaired. Call for times (940) 686-2148, ext. 258.

October 25, 2009 — Guadalupe River SP — Halloween in the Park — It's that time of year again for our Friends group annual Halloween in the Park event. Put on your best costume, load up your family and come out to the park for an evening of fun, stories, food and fright of the fun kind. Hosted by the Friends of Guadalupe River and Honey Creek, this community event is designed for children of every age in a safe and not-too-scary environment. 6-9 p.m.; fees $5 adults, $2 children 12 and under (830) 438-2656

October 31, 2009 — Government Canyon SNA — Halloween at the Canyon — Calling all creatures, ghosts, and kiddies of all ages...Halloween is almost here! Come out and have a ghoulishly fun time at Government Canyon with staff and volunteers. Show up in your creepiest or cutest costume to hunt for "creepy crawlies" and try your hand in our classic costume contest. Scary ghost stories will be told and guests are invited to bring their own pumpkin to carve. We encourage everyone to come out for a howling good time as we go back to the roots of what a spooky Halloween is all about. Guest limit of 50. A treat bag will be given to all children participants. 6-9 p.m.; reservations required beginning on September 30 and ending at noon October 30. I really wish I could make it to Palo Duro but I've already got plans in the city that weekend.
