I have a self inflating 3/4 length pad that weighs 17 oz. add a little air and it is quited comfy. Takes little room as well. R.E.I. has a rock bed you can try them out on. If you don't mind carrying more weight then you can go for the comfort. Just do not get a slippery one. Did that once!
Big Agnes has a pad that slips into the bag so you do not get the relocation problem. Have thought about going that route?

Re: Gear talk?

You're not going to like my answer - I carry one of each!

I got into the self-inflating thing with a Slumberjack pad because Backpacker mag said it was "bombproof." It was always flat in the morning so I sent it back and they replaced it with one twice as heavy, which was also flat every morning. So I got a 72" Z-Rest foam pad because I'd seen it strapped to people's packs in the backcountry a lot, and I knew it wouldn't be flat in the morning.

I doubled the Z-Rest under my shoulders & hips but it was still mighty hard sleeping. I kept hearing everybody rave about their Thermarest pads so I got a Guidelight 3/4 length and it's given me no trouble for over 5 years. But I still carry the Z-rest because it weighs pretty close to nothing and is handy as a seat around camp and on the trail, and makes my bed that much cushier.

Re: Gear talk?

Never did think much about carrying a foam pad as well? Would make things a little more comfy? Good idea!

Re: Gear talk?

I've used the inflatable 3/4 Thermarest's but have gone to the Z-Rest 3/4 pad mainly because of weight... around 10 oz. versus 16 oz. +. When I use it with my tent I find it's much more comfortable if I pitch the tent on softer ground like pine needles, leaves, duff, etc. Anyplace but where a few hundred other hikers have pitched their tents before which by now is hard ground. Makes a big difference.
