Winter Trout Stocking

Anyone need a fishin' fix? Wednesday they will be stocking rainbow trout into Brackenridge park in San Antonio. They are stocking waters all around the state, so check the TPWD website under fishing, and public water stocking to see a location near you.

If the water lies within a state park, no license is required. If not, you must have a license. The wardens are dressed in plain clothes and the fine per fish taken unlawfully is something you don't want to find out. They love to hang out when the fish are stocked somewhere easily accessable. Play by the rules please. There's plenty to go around. You may "TAKE"/"Be in posession of" only 5. 5 is the Daily limit in Texas. You may not put another five in a another cooler, or take them home and come back. Just come back the next day. There is no size limit. You can give them away, but this is also your limit. If you do this while you're out there, you should write your drivers license # and name down and give it to the other person. If they get stopped in posession of to many fish and don't have your note and a license ( for him to verify a legal catch ), they will get fined.

For best results, look for fast moving water. Use a light action rod, with 4-6 #test. A #10 or 14 trout hook ( they are VERY small ). Canned corn is effective but not digestable ( if they get away and keep eating corn, they will die in a few days ). Kraft garlic cheese which is in a plastic casing shaped like a sausage works well. Use a very small pea amount on the hook. Place a very small split shot 12-18" above the hook, let the weight rest on the bottom, and the bait will float in the current. They bite soft so wait for the "Tap TAp" and raise the rod lightly ( These aren't bass guys) and reel in your supper. There is also cheese coloered power bait with works great and keeps all year. Sportsman's warehouse has this as do some academys. Good luck. Remember it is called fishing, not catching.
