Winter Trout Stocking

Anyone need a fishin' fix? Wednesday they will be stocking rainbow trout into Brackenridge park in San Antonio. They are stocking waters all around the state, so check the TPWD website under fishing, and public water stocking to see a location near you.

If the water lies within a state park, no license is required. If not, you must have a license. The wardens are dressed in plain clothes and the fine per fish taken unlawfully is something you don't want to find out. They love to hang out when the fish are stocked somewhere easily accessable. Play by the rules please. There's plenty to go around. You may "TAKE"/"Be in posession of" only 5. 5 is the Daily limit in Texas. You may not put another five in a another cooler, or take them home and come back. Just come back the next day. There is no size limit. You can give them away, but this is also your limit. If you do this while you're out there, you should write your drivers license # and name down and give it to the other person. If they get stopped in posession of to many fish and don't have your note and a license ( for him to verify a legal catch ), they will get fined.

For best results, look for fast moving water. Use a light action rod, with 4-6 #test. A #10 or 14 trout hook ( they are VERY small ). Canned corn is effective but not digestable ( if they get away and keep eating corn, they will die in a few days ). Kraft garlic cheese which is in a plastic casing shaped like a sausage works well. Use a very small pea amount on the hook. Place a very small split shot 12-18" above the hook, let the weight rest on the bottom, and the bait will float in the current. They bite soft so wait for the "Tap TAp" and raise the rod lightly ( These aren't bass guys) and reel in your supper. There is also cheese coloered power bait with works great and keeps all year. Sportsman's warehouse has this as do some academys. Good luck. Remember it is called fishing, not catching.

Thanks for the tips. I have used corn when fishing for them, but never heard of using garlic cheese! They are indeed a lot of fun on ultra-lite tackle.

Re: Winter Trout Stocking (a joke)

Billy Bob had a full boat of fish out on the lake when the Game Warden stopped him.

“Why Billy Bob! Don’t you know the limit here is 5 fish?” the GW asked him. “I’m going to have to haul you in.”

“No, No Mr. Game Warden”, protested Billy Bob. “I didn’t CATCH these fish. These are my pet fish.”

“Come again?!” said the GW, puzzled.

“Yup,” announced Billy Bob proudly. “These are my pet trained fish. I bring ‘em here every couple of days or so. I pitch them into the water, let them swim around a while for exercise, then I whistle and they come and jump right back into the boat to go home again!”

The GW sat with his mouth open. He finally said, “This I gotta see. Show me.”

“OK,” said Billy Bob. He dumped the fish overboard and sat quietly in the boat.

5 minutes passed, then 10. Finally the GW said, “Well?”

“Well what?” asked Billy Bob.

“Whistle them back,” said the GW. “I want to see it.”

“See what?” asked Billy Bob.

“See the fish jump back into the boat!” snapped the GW.

“What fish?” asked Billy Bob innocently.

Re: Winter Trout Stocking

A man and wife were out for the day, the man was fishing in his little boat but the wife stayed on shore to read her book since she wasn't into fishing. After serveral hours, the man returns to shore, ties up his boat, and tells his wife he hasn't caught anything. He eats a sandwich and takes a nap in the chair.

The wife decides to take her husband's boat out into the lake and read her book in the sunshine. While on the water, a game warden approaches the woman.
"Ma'am, I'm gonna have to give you a ticket for fishing in a restricted area."
"But I'm not fishing, I'm reading a book."
"Ma'am," pointing at the tackle left in the boat, "You have all the equipment and for all I know you could start up at any time."
"In that case, sir, I am charging you with sexual assault."
"What?!"
"Yes, you have all the equipment and you could start up at any time."

........................."Enjoy reading your book Ma'am. Have a nice day."

ps, I went fishing this morning at the Tailrace ( canyon lake dam/Guadalupe headwaters) and got skunked. Upon leaving, I couldn't, my battery died. A winter Texan stopped to jump my truck. Gotta love old ladies in minivans from Illinois.

Re: Winter Trout Stocking

My mother and father in law, my son and myself went out to the park after school today and caught our limit in an hour. It was pretty crowded. But we had fun. FIL hasn't caught a fish in years. Man was he thrilled.
