Trout fishing?

Okay, campermom, you did it. We're headed to San Antonio and Junction tonight... but not camping.. still too cold for that. I need some sunshine and fresh air before I go truly batty.

So.... I've never tried fishing for trout. I'm pretty good with the crappie and bluegill / sunfish, and have caught more than a few bass, so, do ya'll have any tips or tricks for me for trout fishing - that don't involve fly fishing?

Thanks!

Brandy

Re: Trout fishing?

You can use can corn, not the cream style. Or you can probably find salmon eggs, (little red balls). Use as light a line as you can, ultra light works great, with small hooks. They are surprisingly easy to catch and generally pretty hungry/aggressive. It occurs to me that I am thinking about the rainbows stocked by TPWD this time of year and you may not be. If you and I are on same page advice stands. If not, I defer to more knowledgeable folks

You probably should double check but seems like we used to have a trout stamp in addition to regular license. They may have relaxed this, but checking is free, being wrong and caught is expensive.

Have fun.

Re: Trout fishing?

Yup, I'm talking about the rainbow trout that TPWD is stocking.

What about red wigglers?

*grins* Thank you very much! I'd already checked and not that I see.

Its always better to check and make sure than to do something silly.

Texas State Parks are proud to host “Free Fishing in State Parks,” a year-long program to encourage folks to spend time enjoying one of America’s greatest past-times. (From the Texas parks website)

so in the park is free.

Re: Trout fishing?

I can give you a fishing report for South Llano for Jan 17/18/19

Sat am, they were biting on yellow Berkleys Power bait.
Sat after lunch, they were biting on power bait
Sun they were biting on power bait
mon they were jumping onto the bank for the power bait.

The fly fisherman were trying so hard, they just wouldn't quit. We were just smokin' those guys. I handed the rod to some folks who were camping next to us and they caught their dinner. We invited them for potluck dinner. Yummy. We caught so many, My shoulder and neck are killin' me, or is it the sunburn?

TECHNIQUE_ use a super small trout hook, smaller than a pencil eraser, pinch off a ball of bait, the size of that eraser, use a single split shot sinker 18" up the line from the hook. Use 4,6, or 8 pound test line on a light action rod so you feel every little nibble. At the second nibble, retrieve quickly with constant resistence so it will be more difficult for him to spit the hook.

Only 5 a day per angler. The trout tag is included in a fishing license. You do not need it in a state park. Just make sure you pay your day fee at the gate.

Re: Trout fishing?

I shoulda stopped by and said howdy. I still haven't caught a trout and I'd love to give it a try.

Oh well. I guess a trip out to Athens is in order as that's MUCH closer to me.
