Hello, fellow sportsmen! I'm active in the WildTexas forum, but this is the first time I attend the "Hunting and Fishing" thread (honestly, I didn't know it existed). I currently live in the Northeast San Antonio area. I lived here almost 4 years. I was born and raised in South Louisiana where squirrel hunting is a way of life. Does anyone know ANYTHING about squirrel hunting in this area? Or even in Texas? I prefer public land because I can't afford private memberships, but am open to advice. Thanks to all!!!

Howdy David,
Lake Georgetown, and many of the State Parks alow squirrel hunting. Get a copy of the Public Hunting booklet. It lists alot of other places. Also look on the TPW web site.

Hello David,
I too am from south Louisiana; Mamou to be exact. I am currently living here in Colorado but will be moving to Paletine,TX in a couple of months. I have investigated the squirrel hunting afoot in that area. I have been to 3 wildlife management areas within 20 miles or so of Palestine. What I can tell you is that the forest are extensive. Possible the tallest pines and largest Oak and Hickory I have seen. Squirrel hunting is something school was out for where I grew up. I really looked at Gus Eng. WMA. Very very good. I've hunted in Thislewaite WMA, Sherburne, and central and north La wma; there seems to be more big hickory and lots of pecan in the forest. Btw, no atvs allowed on almost all wma's. Anyway, I know its a drive for you but the Gus E. Wma is off Interstate 45. For you to take a ride there its like living in Lafayette and hunting in north La. The campsites are nice,but primitive and the woods thick. I've lived in San Antonio and I understand about the waist high national forest!
