Fishing at Calaveras Lake

Hey gang, we have a new user that I could use your assistance in helping out. I'm not a fishing enthusiast, so when Ken emailed me with the following question I suggested he post here in the forums to receive input, particularly since his inquiry is time sensitive (his trip is coming up this weekend!) If you have any information to provide Ken, please share it.

We're having some difficulties with Ken's login in the forums, so that's why I'm posting on his behalf. I'll be forwarding any and all replies to him via email.

My Father and I wish to visit Calaveras Lake this weekend. I was wondering since we have not been to your park in some time, if you could offer some hints or tips on where we might have an opportunity to increase our odds of catching a fish or two? Yes I am quite aware that you cannot predict their hang-out for the weekend, but I was hoping someone might have shared a luck story. We fish at Braunig lake all the time and have an annual pass. However my Father is the kind of man that when he goes fishing he takes more pleasure in watching other people do the catching. The problem is I discovered is that he no longer has confidence in remembering where he use to fish at Calaveras. Any help you can offer would be a gem, and I thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail.

FYI: I (Shannon) recommend using the following email address if you wish to email Kenneth directly. The reason I'm posting this entry for him is because my emails to his listed address above result in bounced emails due to some server configuration issue. Guess we don't have any San Antonio/Central Texas area fishermen around right now.

Re: Fishing at Calaveras Lake

I've picked up a fishing habit at Calaveras and I've had pretty good luck. I've caught more catfish than anything else. I do not have a boat and I really enjoy fishing from the bank. I have had luck using shrimp (with head) and catfish stink bait that WalMart carries. It is very fun, clean, and relaxing at this lake and if you have any questions about this lake, let me know. Good Luck!!!

Re: Fishing at Calaveras Lake

Calaveras lake has tons of fish. The most fun are the Reds. Yes there are Bass, and Crappie, and cats, but those Reds, when they school up during the warm weather, doing laps around the edges of the lake....MAN, when they come thru it's awesome. One rod will bend over in the holder ( on the bank), and then they all go down, it's a feeding friendzie. remember, your limit per day is only 3, don't be greedy. Besides, are you REALLY gonna eat ALL that fish? Take a picture, it lasts longer.

Braunig is a smaller version of Calaveras with less shade. It is easier to get to from the interstate. (I-37 S.)

I've never had much luck at Canyon. Guess you need a boat for the Bass there.

Now, in the winter, they stock rainbow trout at the base of the dam at Canyon. When you're desperate to fish in the winter, they may be small but it is still catching.

Re: Fishing at Calaveras Lake

Went fishing this past Thursday after work. Had bait in the water @ 5:58pm. Had fish on at 6:07pm.

Here's how it went. I had one rod out and was wading out to cast the second rod when the drag was screaming out line and wouldn't stop. I turned and ran as best as I could thru the waist high water to grab my rod before being spooled. The fish was heading straight out across the lake. He took about 5 minutes to play in retreive. He was 32" and 12#. He is in my freezer.

Should have just left after that. When they came thru at 8, my bait was spend and the fellas next to me, with fresher bait, had a fish. That's OK, I didn't want to clean 2 fish, one was plenty.

For more San Antonio/ and south area fish tales, check out Alamo Area Anglers website.
