Fishing in Austin?
Where are some good places to fish in and around Austin? We don't have a boat, so I'm looking for locations where we can fish from the shore or a dock. Thank you! Any info is appreciated.

I'm not a big fishing enthusiast, but what precludes you from fishing from the banks of Lake Travis in Austin, or the banks of the Colorado River, or the banks of Inks Lake (a State Park north of Austin, in Burnet), or the ponds at Bastrop State Park in the Lost Pines (about 40 mins from Austin)...
These are just a few off the top of my head. We list a goodly number of lakes and parks in the Austin area you can check out. I can't think of any except Hamilton Pool Preserve that *don't* allow fishing.

Re: Fishing in Austin?
There are a few places to fish from the bank in this area. If you want to do some trout fishing in the winter on the Guadalupe, Blanco, or Beuscher St. Park, or Kerrville check out the State of Texas P&W website and look for the Trout Stocking schedule. They usually trout in those areas during Jan and Feb.
Otherwise, during the spring check out the Blanco river around the dams and in the creeks (Blanco River State Park). In 2005 you do not need a fishing license to fish in the state parks. Also, in Austin, you can fish Town Lake, there are many places to access the banks. You can even rent a canoe at Zilker park and take a cooler. I've done this a couple of times and it is great wildlife viewing right in downtown!
Below Longhorn Dam is a good spot too.
Good luck.

I'm a new arrival, but in some searchings I've found some good places. Don't overlook some of the local small lakes and ponds as well. It's especially easy with the kids as well, since many of them offer areas to play and convenient restrooms. Brushy Lake between Cedar Park and Round Rock is an example...

Re: Fishing in Austin?
Texas State Parks have extended the Family Fishing Celebration. Bring your kids and fish free in many state parks in Texas. Learn how or teach others to fish. Freshwater and salt water fishing, urban or rural fishing, teach or be taught ...
State park Family Fishing Celebration in Texas is going on until 8/31/2006!
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is waiving fishing license requirements for families as part of the Family Fishing Celebration. There will also be events throughout the year to add to the excitement -- from kidsafe fishing derbies to Learn to Fish seminars. Some parks will be providing loaner equipment and bait: just call ahead to ask.
FYI - beware of eating the fish from Town Lake and directly below Austin on the Colorado River. Same with some creeks (like Bull Creek) in Austin. Lake Austin has public access.
Have a great time!

Hi Rob,
Im also new to Austin and will just stay here til december. As a non- resident, did you buy a fishing license to fish the community parks? Are they really strict in implementing this, do wardens check for licenses? I wonder if I could get away with weekend catch and release fishing??

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I had posting issues. Yes, I did buy a license, and I can't find anywhere where it says you can fish without a license in the local community parks. I recommend catch and release in the urban parks anyways...that water drains out of Austin...I see wardens around once in a while, but not too often. I know back in my home state the local sheriff would enforce those laws too, but I'm not sure about here.
