Smile campsite for family fishing????

Anyone know of a SP with good fishing for the kids either on the shore or in a rented jon boat? We live near Tyler. We have been to these state parks: Cooper Lake, Possum Kingdom and Tyler State Park. I liked the size of Tyler and the fact that they offered rental canoes and jon boats at their marina... but I prefer less trees and more open lakeviews than the tent site we had up in the woods. (Lakeview was all booked up) At Possum Kingdom our campsite was near the water with great lake views. We were on a grassy clearing with just enough trees for some shade. That is probably more what we are looking for. We would really like to visit a new place. I would also be interested to know the clearest lakes for swimming and snorkeling. I seem to remember as kid that either Lake Limestone or Lake Belton were really clear.
Thanks for your help!:

I just saw your post but have you tried Lake Sam Rayburn? I think the park is called San Augustine State Park. It is really pretty, shady and has some nice campsites. It has been awhile since we have been there but we liked it all the times we were there.

Re: campsite for family fishing????

Meridian SP has a nice little lake for fishing, not as big as Tyler, and the camping is not on the lakefront. Closer to home Purtis Creek would be good. A larger lake with views would be Whitney or Fairfield. The state park at Whitney is closed due to flooding earlier this year but the corp parks are still open. Whitney can be fairly clear or very muddy depending on rainfall/runoff upstream. Fort Parker SP, (near Mexia) would be a nice little spot for fishing. It has the main body of the lake/river and also a smaller pond. I have no knowledge of the other places you mentioned

Were you at Cooper South Sulpher Unit ? The fishing areas there looked great had more than one pier. Lake Tawakani has lots of shoreline. I agree on Fairfield and it is a power plant lake (warm water year round, bigger fish)if you go to the Texas parks web site they indicate boat rentals, these decrease as weather gets cooler and after labor day.

Fairfield is a nice park with good fishing, you can catch redfish there, all from the bank if you don't have a boat.Lake Whitney is a good fishing spot also.Good luck

Re: campsite for family fishing????

There is a small lake with camping at Cleburne State Park. There was some people fishing along the shore and by the dam, and there is one dock I saw. There were some boaters fisihing - it is limited to slower speeds (no skiing).

Other than that, you would have to look it up to see what it offered. It would be closer to Tyler than Possum Kingdom, but not by much. You could combine a trip to Whitney or the Brazos River above Whitney, since they are close to Cleburn.

There's another lake close to Cleburn SP, called Lake Pat Cleburne. It is on the edge of Cleburne itself. I found a park where the river goes under a bridge and then into the lake. There were people fishing from the bank, and a boat ramp into the river if you had your own boat.
