Re: "Used" Road Bikes

I know you're in the San Antonio area but if your city sponsors a MS150 bike ride for charity fund raising, then you might be able to pick up a bike after that event cheaply, as there will be those that go out and buy a bike and decide never to ride again.

I mention the MS150 because the Houston to Austin event just completed this weekend with around 12,000 riders. Ouch, that's alot of sore muscles.

Re: "Used" Road Bikes

I wonder how many folks ride the MS150 and have never really trained for the event? The folks I know who've done it trained for it with successively longer road rides. Anyone who gets up to riding 100+ miles is unlikely to sell their bike after finishing the MS150, except perhaps to upgrade to a newer, lighter model... but I'm sure there are a lot of drop out at various stages through the race and vow, "Never, ever, again!"

Justin's been surprising me as after we bought my new car (the beloved hybrid I can't stop talking about), he bought a nice Felt road bike and has been riding successively longer road rides. His longest thus far was this past Sunday morning -- 30 miles round-trip. I don't have the guts/will for that kind of riding -- stick me on a trail on my mountain bike and I'm happy, though no ace mountain biker of any sort.

I wonder what police departments and universities with bike patrol officers do when the bikes are retired... and if they're in any shape to be "adopted" when that happens, or if they're pretty much just parts at that point? Just a thought.

Re: "Used" Road Bikes

From what I've seen most of your police/universities use Mountain Bikes or hybrid types as road bikes would not hold up to the wear and tear of chases. The recreation depts. may have some road bikes and that might be a good place to look.

Thanks

Re: "Used" Road Bikes

There is also an option towards the end of the year to get a new road bike on sale as bike shops get rid of their current year models. Yes, like cars, most bicycle manufacturers release new/updated models each year - usually at a minimum a paint job change but sometimes a change in components, etc.
