I have posted dozens of Cycling events and such on my website TEXAS: Landmarks and Legacies. Maybe they would interest you. Just go to howdyyall.com and type cycling in the Topic window.

I am not a serious cyclist, but I do like to take my bike to several of the state parks when I go. Bastrop State Park and Inks Lake State Park are two great parks for family bicycling.

Anyway. Later.

Bob

Re: Texas on Two Wheels

Hey Jeff,
I just finished reading a book about a Swede who biked from Sweden to Nepal (over 7000 miles) to Everest Base Camp in order to climb Mt. Everest. His main obective was to climb Mt Everest unaided. He obviously had a bike trailer to haul all of his camping and climbing equipment. He then stashed his bike in a small town and backpacked his gear over the approach trail to Base Camp.
He was eventually successful in climbing the mountain but his journey was only half completed as he packed up, remounted his bike and returned home to a hero's welcome.
Has a long distance trip ever had any appeal to you? Well, not necessarily 7000 miles worth but something on the order of the length or breadth of Texas? Just curious.

Re: Texas on Two Wheels

my husband and plan such a bicycle tour someday- a month long perhaps, in a few years (once we are free again) - somewhere up north. I'm not comfortable enough here in texas to try crossing it though. it seems as though every time i ride down here, there is some psycho in a truck trying to run us off the road. My husband has been hit twice (both up in boston though)- and i'm not sure how long his luck will last, so i dont want to push it more than i have to

i imagine crossing texas in the fall would be a mighty fine trip. couldn't pay me enough to do it in the summer though. but octoberish, when its still warm during the days (80s) but not too warm, and cools off at night... that'd be real nice.

In my opinion we need more bicycle lanes. This would promote healthy exercise and reduce pollution.

Re: Texas on Two Wheels

I'm with kai regarding road rides in Texas. I ride the road in Bastrop and Buescher state parks. Regular state highways and farm to market roads scare me. I see people driving on the shoulder over blind hills and such daily. I like my cycling dirty

you are absolutely right. if texas were more bicycle friendly, I might be enjoying my stay here a little more. but as it is, I ache for the bicycle culture I left behind.

there is a coalition in san antonio that aims at making the city more bicycle friendly. I think the website may be www.sametroplan.org but I am not sure.
