(Road) Bicycle Safety

This seems timely, considering my group of cyclists had a so-called more experienced rider unequivocally state that "It's okay for cyclists to go through red lights, as long as you slow down a little."

Bike safety & bicycle traffic laws (From San Antonio Police Dept.)

I'm not being a hard@ss... I got a ticket while driving recently, so I've had to take driver safety/training to get the ticket dropped for insurance purposes, so this is something that's fresh on my mind. Don't let it be fresh on yours because you're in a wreck with a vehicle. Vehicles are big and smelly and most of all, they hurt, bad.

Re: (Road) Bicycle Safety

Additional information:

Quote:
In 2001, there were 728 bicycling fatalities and 45,000 bicycling injuries resulting from traffic crashes in the United States. While these numbers continue to decrease from year to year, bicyclist fatalities still account for 2 percent of all traffic fatalities as well as 2 percent of all traffic injuries.

Re: (Road) Bicycle Safety

Howdy Shannon,

Good tips here.. and no matter how "right" you are, a bike always loses the car wreck.

Every summer, for the past 7 years, there are hordes of bike riders on the hill country roads. These roads are frequently without shoulders and if the riders clump up, it can get real dicey at 60 mph.

If you're going to bike on the roads.. be smart and alive.
Adios,
