Most important athlete of all-time?

There was an interesting read in playboy's june issue where they interviewed Lance Armstrong, mentioning him as possibly being the most important athlete of all-time. I guess I never really thought of him like that before, but after reading through, this guy overcame 12 tumors, goes on to win the Tour de France 6 times in a row, and helped raise close to $40 million for cancer by selling those simple yellow bracelets for $1 each...he has my vote.

Just wondering what everyone else's opinion is?

Re: Most important athlete of all-time?

"Most important athlete" has a lot of connotations. Does it mean most inspirational? Best-achieved in his/her chosen sport? Most contributions to their sport (eg. I would agree Lance Armstrong made Americans care about the Tour de France; if we had an American soccer phenom like Lance, more Americans would care about soccer, for example).

I think Lance has done a lot, both personally and professionally, that is to be respected. I don't know if I'd call him the "most important athlete," even though I don't have a favorite athlete that I would bestow with that, either.

Good question. I'm interested in what others, who are more interested in competitive sports than I am, have to say.
