Justin's Biking to the Beach!

I thought I'd mentioned it here, but my memories apparently failing.

My hubby, Justin Moore, is participating in this years' Valero MS150 Bike to the Beach . The Valero MS150 is a 150-mile (2 day) charity fundraising ride from San Antonio, Texas, to Corpus Christi, Texas. Proceeds benefits the Multiple Schlerosis Society.

Justin is riding with the Valero team in this year's MS150 and you can read about his training and preparation in his Bike Geek blog.

The Valero MS150 is October 7-8, 2006, and begins at the SBC Center in San Antonio, Texas, early on the morning of October 7, 2006.

If he hasn't done so already, call and get a room in Beeville. On the second day, you can tell who slept in a motel and who slept on the gym floor in a sleeping bag.

Re: Justin's Biking to the Beach!

He's got a room. All the rooms in Beeville were booked about a week to a week and a half ago, actually. (I'm sure some might "become" available at higher rates for those who are desperate...hehe).

I and Justin's family will meet up with him in Corpus Christi and then transport his whipped body and road chariot (bicycle) back home to San Antonio after the ride.

Or, we'll rescue him somewhere in between, but I'm convinced his training thus far is such that he'll finish in Corpus Christi. Either way, we're proud of him!

Re: Justin's Biking to the Beach!

Well, gang, tomorrow morning bright and early marks the start of the Valero MS 150 Bike to the Beach all-age, all-skill level bicycle ride the 150-miles from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, Texas.

Our very own Justin W. Moore will be participating (#501 riding for Team Velo Valero; if you see him -- give him a shout out!) and I'll be heading down to Corpus Christi with his parents (my inlaws) to welcome him in Corpus when he arrives on Sunday.

Here's a brief reprint from the October 2, 2006, issue of the San Antonio Express-News, with links to additional MS 150 related news. I'll have to ride this with Justin someday, if he's got it in him to ride it again in upcoming years. First, I need a road bike... I'm not riding 150 miles on my mountain bike, trying to keep up with lighter, faster road bikes!

While there is a competitive contingent, the two-day ride from San Antonio to Corpus Christi attracts participants of all ages, shapes, sizes and occupations -- not to mention various modes of wheeled transport.

One thing they all have in common is a desire to help raise funds supporting research to find a cure for multiple schlerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system that affects an estimated 400,000 Americans.

Here are the stories of some rides (and a skater) who have found a way, a reason and a purpose when it comes to meeting this challenge.
Justin is still about $65 short of his funding goal (he doesn't have to meet it prior to the start of the ride), so if you would like to support this worthwhile cause by donating to help him meet his goal it would be appreciated by us as well as the Multiple Schlerosis Society which the ride 100% benefits.

Re: Justin's Biking to the Beach!

Had to add "art" and bump this for today's official start of the MS 150. Justin's already been riding for 1 hour as of this moment! Many more to go!

In case anyone is curious, here are the Google Earth maps (based on GPS data) for both days of the Valero MS 150 Justin is currently participating in.

Re: Justin's Biking to the Beach!

Justin just called in from Falls City, Texas -- their lunch breakpoint and the halfway point between San Antonio and Beeville. Just 50 more miles to Beeville, a warm shower and sleep before the final 50 mile leg on Sunday to Corpus Christi! He said they'd been in Falls City for about 45 minutes for lunch and were going to head back out on the road after the call.

Here's a screen capture of the Google Earth map I mentioned in my previous post, showing where Falls City is located and just how far they've ridden already. Awesome!

Re: Justin's Biking to the Beach!

HE MADE IT and so did everyone in his little sub-team from work (USAA, though they all rode with the much better supported Velo Valero Team.) I am so proud of Justin and his friends for riding the full 150 miles and raising money to benefit the Multiple Schlerosis Society.

Justin is doing incredibly well, considering he burned nearly 9,300 calories in the two days of the bike ride and spent nearly 11 hours in the saddle!!!!

I'll let Justin's forthcoming blogging at his Bike Geek blog share all the photos and anecdotes from the ride.
