family trails

Anyone know a great site that lists family trails in Texas? We have a 8 & 4 year old. I heard something about old railroads made into bike trails???
Thanks,
Suzanne

Re: family trails

We were just at Lake Mineral Wells and they have a trailway. We didn't use it but the park was real nice. There is another one, North, Panhandle area, maybe Caprock Canyon or Palo DUro.

Re: family trails

You might want to consider Birch Creek State Park on Lake Somerville. It has a nice trailway. Horses and bicycles are the main modes of transportation. It's about an hour and a half to two hour drive for you.
Since your in Killeen, why not try out Inks Lake in Burnet. It's not that far away. It has a little bit of everything for everyone.
Some of the best people can be found in the parks. Meet your neighbor and enjoy the outdoors.

By the way, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is active nationwide in converting derelict/unuse railways to recreation trails for hiking, biking, etc.

Here's a listing of the rails-to-trails segments in Texas:

Re: family trails

Pedaltexas.com was a great resource but it's not around anymore.

This site lists a lot of trails and gives some info on their difficulty.
http://www.texasoutside.com/bikeTrail.html

The Dallas Off Road Biking Association maintains most of the mountain bike trails in North Texas. Some are tougher than others, but most have sections that are ok for kids. Loops 1 and 2 of Rowlett Creek Preserve are a good place to start.

River Legacy Park in Arlington has some nice paved trails and a new mountain bike section.
The greenbelt from Hwy 380 east of Denton up to Lake Ray Roberts is nice and flat.
Duck Creek in Garland is ok but probably not worth the drive for you - you're better off with River Legacy.
