Biked to work today...

Took the plunge and traded a 1/2-ton pickup truck for a 30lb mountain bike for the commute to work this morning.

It was quite the experience, here's my blog post:
Bike Geek: A carbon-free day...

When it was all said and done, with 26 miles or so of riding, I saved two gallons of gas and burned 1500 calories instead.

Not bad!

Re: Biked to work today...

Very, very proud of you, Justin. I do worry about other people (inattentive drivers, aggressive drivers, etc.) but it's not that different from your flying. I'm thrilled the route was manageable and that maybe you've found another way to incorporate your long-standing focus on bicycling frequently for health benefits into being a viable transportation method occasionally to work, as well.

Re: Biked to work today...

Thanks for the support!

Like my flying, I do what is in my control to reduce the risk. In the case of biking to work that has meant the following:
  • Installing a set of Blackburn X8 headlamps
  • Installing a ViewPoint tailight (that is VERY bright)
  • Joining other riders on the ride home from work

I also continue to learn more about good bicycle safety skills, use hand signals, etc.

Looking forward to biking to work again this Friday but this time on the road bike!
