Voluntary Gas Rationing

A simple, completely voluntary way to start reducing your gas consumption by using it more wisely (combining trips, carpooling, cutting out wasteful trips to the store that can be worked in with another outing, etc.)

 Voluntary, non-government imposed solutions are always, IMHO, the best for things so near and dear to Americans' collective hearts -- our vehicles.

Thanks for posting that, Shannon. We have started combining trips recently. Whereas a few months back, one of us would run over to the store at Bandera Pointe and then a few hours later, we would run back over to the same general area for something else, we now combine.

I have started trying to "hypermile". It is a different way of driving and it is hugely increasing my gas millage. (by as much as 10mpg sometimes).

Re: Voluntary Gas Rationing

I do not know if I did it as part of gas rationing or healthful activity, but will do it more. I needed to run up to the local store for graduation cards, a mile or so trip. Instead of firing up the truck I just got on the bike an peddled my way there. Something a lot of folks do everyday, but a first for me, at least the first time in decades. A small step to be sure, but many small steps add up to a big change.

Actually, all of the local bike shops in San Antonio that I've spoken to lately are reporting strong sales and overall business. While I am pained at the high gas prices like everyone else (it recently cost $83 to fill-up my truck) - I am also a bit excited about hearing how popular bicycles are becoming. Now we just need our legislators to ensure that all new streets and street upgrades incorporate bicycle lanes.

There's an organization with that goal in mind, here are the details:
Bike Geek: Complete Streets...

Kudos on using your bike to run that errand.

It's this point alone that's keeping me from purchasing a bicycle. It's like we're taking our lives in our hands each time we venture onto a major street.
There is simply no infastructure for the bicycle user. Like you mentioned, Justin, the politicos could change this if they pushed hard enough..

Re: Voluntary Gas Rationing

I just bought a bike about 6 months ago. For the price of 3 tankfuls, I have a bike and a lock. Although, I can't see myself riding to the corner store for a bag of ice. By the time I'd get home, I'd have a bag of water. We could take them to the pool during the summer, that would help the wallet, the environment, and the figure.

Planning errands and keeping a list in my purse helps keep the running around to a minimum. My favorite is going to HEB on the way home from work. There are 3 on my route home. That way, I don't have to do that on my day off, I can sit at home, and pay bills online. Oh, what fun. (After that, we can go to the pool!)

Re: Voluntary Gas Rationing

I am sure that this pales in comparison to some, but to me it was a definate eye opener. I totaled up gas expense for last month and it came to $933, or more than double January's expense. Did not make any trips so that is pretty much a normal month, at least in terms of miles driven. I generally just try to roll with the punches, but dang that puts a hole in the budget.

Re: Voluntary Gas Rationing

I'm with you SRDS, I don't have a good road to get started on errands. We can sit out in our driveway and pretend to be at the Speedway, the speed on our county road is scary and not safe for bike riding, not enough room to share the road. I could take my bike to a safer place in the back of my truck but then I would be almost to where I need to go by then. I guess my bike is destined to remain a source of fun and exercise. I also combine trips now and almost never just go to one place anymore. BTW, we just got back from the Frio River and diesel was as much as $4.89 in one place.

Re: Voluntary Gas Rationing

Here's a post just for fun. This one comes from my mom, with proper credit to the songwriter (as well as the complete song's lyrics) at the end:

Quote:
A lot of folks can't understand how we came
To have an oil shortage here in our country.
---
Well, there's a very simple answer.
---
Nobody bothered to check the oil.
---
We just didn't know we were getting low.
---
The reason for that is purely geographical.
---
Our OIL is located in
---
Alaska
---
California
---
Coastal Florida
---
Coastal Louisiana
---
Kansas
---
Oklahoma
---
Pennsylvania
And
Texas
