Urban Legend: Gas Boycott

After reading this going around on all the various forums I frequent, I figured I'd make a pre-emptive strike and debunk the urban legend/chain email that's going around calling for a "gas out" boycott on May 15 --

Read more here:

Buy a hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle, take public transportation, bicycle, walk, carpool, etc.... THOSE things actually make a difference, because they actually affect consumption.

Boycotting buying gas for one day? Uhm... people will just gas up before or after that day. It makes no sense. It's not even like a public transit/bicycling day where everyone's encouraged to not drive (thus reducing gasoline consumption for that single day by a small amount).

Yep, but this will show up every time that gas prices spike. DW and I long ago did what we could to reduce the amount of gasoline we use. You may think not given the truck we drive (see avator), but that is the only set of wheels we have. We also work at the same place and combine trips as much as we can. I find it frustrating at times because projects that I'm working on have to go on "hold" for lack of small parts. I won't drive all the way to Lowes for a couple of screws and sometimes there is no option. We used to have a drugstore in town that had a good supply of hardware. They closed years ago and now we have a drugstore that often doesn't have drugs and I wouldn't trust them if they did (CVS:no. But I degress. Gas costs too much. There is little to be done about it except use less.

Happy Camping!

Yeah, I remember getting an email about this on Myspace. I remember thinking at the time that it didn't make sense because skipping one day wouldn't exactly stick it to the Man. They'd be like, "Oh no, we didn't make any money today!" "How much do we still have?" "Billions." "Oh, well, we're still good - spike the price to teach these freaks a lesson."

I agree with you Turn key. Be smart about consumption and use as little as possible. Rising cost effect everybody, or most of us anyway. One day boycott is just stupid, proves nothing, changes nothing.
