Gas Tax Holiday?

I have a personal rule of thumb never to talk (too much) about politics or other divisive topics here on WildTexas.com. The only exception I tend to make to that personal rule is when discussing issues related to protecting our natural resources, which ostensibly anyone who enjoys the outdoors, parks and wildlife, cares about to one level or another.

I have a personal blog where I've made it very clear where on stand on the gas tax holiday currently being tossed about in the news (it hasn't come to pass, but all three U.S. Presidential candidates have weighed in on the topic.)

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the gas tax holiday being proposed for this summer, to temporarily suspend the 18 or so cent per gallon tax on gasoline and diesel fuels in the US?

Here's where I break my personal rule and share my thoughts, since it would be unfair to solicit yours only to keep mine under wraps -- I think it's sheer lunacy, and nothing more than pandering to voters.

If you don't mind reading me spouting off further, you can read my blog entry on the topic
-> Geek Habitat » Gas Tax HOLIDAY? (WARNING: contains a few colorful metaphors, as Spock would say. I rarely use those online but in this case I feel they add, rather than detract, from the message.)

Otherwise, we'll just leave it at the "sheer lunacy" description.

Re: Gas Tax Holiday?

Pandering to voters, or potential voters is all that it is. What better way to catch the attention of a voter then to mention a possible savings for them. Even more so during these times of sticker shock at the pump. Does nothing to address the real problem(s).

Re: Gas Tax Holiday?

Under the theory it will help everyone, why not have an income tax holiday also while were at it. (note tounge in cheek here).

As a famous 70's band once sang "Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today"

Re: Gas Tax Holiday?

Of course it's pandering to the voters and attempting to buy votes. Does anyone think it's coincidental that the last two income tax bonus checks were given out this year and four years ago (election years)?
