Exclamation Barton Springs in Austin

Quote:
Dear Austinites,

We all know that the future of the Barton Springs watershed (which includes popular swimming hole, Barton Springs Pool) balances on our ability to protect it from further degradation. Over the last 20 years studies have shown that the water quality is declining because toxic chemicals and pollution are fouling the watershed. Some biologists believe that Barton Springs may now be in the process of dying.

Citizens in Austin have voted for candidates who support the implementation of plans to protect the watershed, limit development, and save Barton Springs. Despite this, our City Council, at the August 1st meeting, will vote on a proposed settlement with a development corporation called Stratus Properties that would allow the New York-based corporation to build 750,000 sq. feet of office, 250,000 sq. feet of retail, and approximately 1,730 residences over our watershed--and the most sensitive aquifer in Texas.

If the Council votes for the agreement with Stratus Properties, it will:
  • Promote massive development, pollution, and traffic in the Barton Springs watershed
  • Violate the Save Our Springs Ordinance voted into effect by Austin voters 10 years ago
  • Subsidize the Stratus developers with $16.4 million
  • Cost taxpayers the price of expanding roads and highways to the development tracts
  • Fail to protect Barton Springs, and the endangered Barton Springs Salamander (among other things)
I am calling on friends, neighbors, and colleagues to voice our strong opposition to this assault. Call and email the Mayor and City Council TODAY, and urge them to vote "NO" on the proposed Stratus settlement. It only takes a few minutes.

CONTACT:Thank you for reading and for your appreciation of the beautiful outdoors.

Sincerely,

There is also information about this issue posted on the S.O.S. Alliance website: www.sosalliance.com.

And on Sunday, July 28th, from 5-10pm, the S.O.S. Alliance is having a "Barton Springs Social" at 3600 South 2nd Street (1 block West of South 1st Street, between Cardinal Lane and South Center Street). Lee Ann Atherton and special guest musicians will entertain, and donations of $5 or more will be used to fight these developments.

Thank you again for your time in reading this important message.
