Wind & Camping at Fort Davis

Just checking the weather for there & they have a 'high wind' alert! Sounds scary. Winds up to 100 mph????? We get less than that during hurricanes on the Gulf!!

Just how bad ARE the winds?? We have a pop up, but it does move around quite a bit in wind! Of course I won't put up my awning.

We're leaving Saturday for Spring Break.

Re: Wind & Camping at Fort Davis

The winds really can be "that bad" during the Spring in west Texas. This is the main reason I don't go backpacking out there this time of year. I would think there are very few pop-ups, probably none, that would stand up to 100 mph winds. I know I wouldn't want to be inside one in that situation.

You might want to call out there and talk to the park rangers to get their input.

Hope all goes well and you get to make your trip, without 100 mph winds that is!

Wow hb1 thats some bad winds,I don't think I would want to be in the pup at those speeds. We had 45mph during a thunder strom once and that was'nt fun.Maybe there will be some type of natural windbreak you will be able to use.I think if the winds get that high I would close pup and seek safety.Hopefully they pass thru before your trip.Good Luck and keep us posted.

Have Fun

Re: Wind & Camping at Fort Davis

I remember on one of the tours I took of McDonald Observatory (NW of Ft. Davis) being told of a time where they measured *sustained* 90 MPH winds at the top of Mt. Locke in March. I'm usually out there in April-May (June this year) and haven't seen that kind of wind, but I have seen some pretty good gusts. Usually, though, they were associated with thunderstorms. Then again, wind is wind regardless of association! It's a great place to go (and stay :-), but the winds can be fierce at times. Be careful.

If your timeframe is locked down, you might consider making the trip but staying in a cabin. Maybe Prude Ranch, Crow's Nest Ranch, etc. Lots of places in the Davis Mountains, although it might be a little more difficult finding a place this late... ?

Re: Wind & Camping at Fort Davis

You might try Balmoreah SP its right near Ft. Davis and on lower elevation. Close enough to comute. Weather showed wind warnings till Saturday for both areas but didn't mention the speed you noted.

Keep awning up, cook indoors and hold onto your hat
