Question Who is going camping this October? (2009)

We are planning to try Mineral Wells State Park or Meridian State Park the Weekend of October 9.

Any input is good. So who is planning an outing and where?

I want to!! Just trying to finish up stuff here at the house and then I'm ready! No plans just yet but soon. So far all we have booked is Guadalupe SP for Thanksgiving but there is no way I'm waiting that long.

As of now, I have a trip to Buescher State Park planned for Texas/OU weekend. I can't think of a better weekend to get out of Dallas and enjoy Austin.

We'll be at Garner State Park in mid October--either doing tent camping or cabins--waiting for someone to cancel for the cabins!

Re: Who is going camping this October? (2009)

We-be-lo camp out the weekend of 24/25 at Bear Creek Scout park in Hunt. We will be expecting the boys to act as a patrol and do everything for themselves. This should be difficult as most of the mommas will be going. I can't wait to see how they all do.

If anyone is approached by a scout selling popcorn, please buy some. Most of the packages are 15. That sounds steep but it is a fundraiser so the packs can purchase awards and have events and activities for the kids. Something else is that you can make a 25 or 40 donation. You will get a card and pin, and BSA will send 25 or 40 worth of popcorn overseas to the troops serving our country. So, for those who don't want popcorn for yourself but think scouting is a worthy endeavor, please make a 25 military donation.

We're going to Choke Canyon weekend of Oct 17th... wish we could go sooner!! Don't have anything else reserved yet but after the long, hot summer we will be trying to get as many trips in this fall as possible!

Re: Who is going camping this October? (2009)

Just a heads up to Happybooker1,
The Lone Star Bike Rally is taking place in Galveston during Halloween weekend. It will be VERY crowded everywhere from far west Galveston Island to the east end. If you like motorcycles, you will be very pleased but you may not find solitude if that is what you want. We have been there for the last several years during the bike rally as an observer, not a participator and it can get really rowdy. Just thought I would let you know about that.

Re: Who is going camping this October? (2009)

Well Mineral Wells got rained out and after 11 days of rain finally had a nice weekend (and everyone wanted to go camping)

But by the time I looked for sites on a Wednesday, Mineral Wells and a number of other parks were full, which in October in Texas is not surprising.

Did find a full w,E & S site at Lake Tawakoni SP, so headed back to one of our regular places.

If you want pictures visit this post, as noted considering location to Dallas and North Texas, this park is still an undiscovered gem.

Lake Tawakoni SP August 2008 just scrool down

This report is more on what we did and ate, just for Fun

Friday after set up, hit Katies Kafe in Wills Point, love the Chicken Fried Steak special at lunch, the place is only open limited hours (not dinner) so usually plan one lunch meal here. Thanks LW

Friday dinner consisted of Brats on the grill with chips and fruit
Saturday had pancakes for breakfast with coffee, had sausages along
Ziti noodles with spagetti sauce with some french bread for lunch
Ham steak grilled with mashed potatoes and pork and beans, then finished off the fruit

Weather was low 70's and sun with upper 40's at night, did need the heavy sleeping bags and the space heater came out with it hit 42 for a short while

Spent part of the day taking the short hikes the park offers, lots of fall birds in the air, ran into a bird group looking for native species.

Just great to get out, the park was full but not noisy or crowded.

I knew about that, but we changed plans anyway. Just got back from Lexington Texas where we went to the Chocolate Lovers Festival there. OMG!!! Yummmmm is all I can say! We stayed @ the South 40 RV park over Sat. night.

Halloween wkend we're going to Lake Somerville probably. They have a Halloween 'scary' hike that sounds like fun!

Re: Who is going camping this October? (2009)

This weekend was perfect at Garner! We ended up staying in a cabin which was nice because we had to turn the heater on at night. There were lots of campers out and about; we usually go every year around the same time and that's the most crowded I've seen Garner in October. Madi (our 15 month old) had a great time, it seems she enjoys camping as much as me. There were not a whole bunch of deer or skunks this time...maybe the drought took it's toll on the wildlife.
