Question Where to take a 3 year old camping in January

Grr... silly computer deleted my post when I submitted it.

Anywho...the shortened version is that hubby and I always go camping in the Spring and Summer in Big Bend, and have taken the little one along since she was born as well. There, we have cold nights and warm days. So we have cold weather gear.

We want to go on a weekend trip over the 22nd and 23rd of January. We've never been on such a short trip, or in Winter.

Coming from Dallas, Big Bend is out b/c of the drive time (even though hubby says the weather is great there now ). We wouldn't mind going anywhere within about a 4 hour radius.

We like typical family camping type stuff: car close to tent, easy to moderate hikes, scenic drives, food, fire (where allowed, always a plus, though), wildlife, photography (even the three year old has her own camera that she uses). Of course, it must be family friendly, and bathrooms/running water in somewhat close proximity are also needed. We are most concerned about January weather in the various locations. Do you have any place to recommend?

Unhappy Re: Where to take a 3 year old camping in January

2 days, 40 viewings, and no responses. Hmm... I would say other people are interested in the answer, too. And that I'm not going to get one here before it is time to go. Shame, too... I thought this forum was a great idea.

It's been a busy week -- first week a lot of folks are back at work in awhile, in fact. Give 'em (and me) time, and we'll help get you set up with some good options.

Shannon,

I did not mean to direct the post to you. I have seen that you are the main source of info around here and was more lamenting the idea that there are so many who are curious, but so few who know. It is an underrepresented field, camping. Anywho... I look forward to any recommendations you can give! TGIF!!

Sounds like you are looking for a state park. In that case, you're in the right place to do your own research for a park close to you and that meets all of the particulars you have spelled out. Then check weather.com for an extended forecast of that weekend. Enjoy.

Cool Re: Where to take a 3 year old camping in January

I hate to promote Dinosaur Valley SP because I think it already gets more hype than it deserves, but my 3 yr old and I had some good hikes & camps there. The campground sites are hard to get and the backcountry sites are awful, but there are other places in the area to camp.

Cleburne SP would be good.

Lake Benbrook has some nice Corps of Engineers campgrounds:

Lake Ray Roberts also has some great parks:
