Re: What five things do you like to have when...

Since most postings seemed to be about car camping, my list will deal with such.

1. Definitely firewood brought from home. Be envied by other campers while you are roasting you smores and they are still trying to light that expensive, green, kindling bought at the park store.

2. Small stand of Christmas lights. With the roaring campfire, the strand gives off enough light not to need the old Coleman lantern after supper has been put away. Left on all during the night, helps light the path for those middle of the night callings.

3. Hear, hear for that portable fan. It can just be enough to make it through a Texas summer night without you wanting to pack up the first thing in the morning.

4. A copy of Stardate magazine so I will know what is in the heavenly sky above me.

5. (6) 2.5” washers and (2) empty peach cans. Pitchin’ makes excellent new neighbors.

Re: What five things do you like to have when...

Hmmm, 5 things I want to take car camping. O.k. here goes

A trailer to tow behind the car...or in my case van?

A cooler full of beer.

A few bunches of cigars.

Some good steaks and potato (e)s

A good chair and book or magazine!

I know that might be cheating a little but they are kida the same

Though I do miss the car camping but the wife is happy with the trailer?
But I do backpack!!!

Re: What five things do you like to have when...

First thing on my list is the pop-up camper I bought last June. It's got all the essentials already aboard, everything from the can opener to the pillow to the air mattress blower-upper thing. Lessee, the tin coffee percolator, an old friend and quite the veteran, is in there too, as is a can of French Market coffee & chicory (can't find it just anywhere). Heheheheh, life is sweet!

As a world-famous professional kayak bum, my truck (a Toy 4x4) is stocked at all times with a good first-aid kit, sunscreen, skeeter repellant, hats, foul-weather gear, fishing gear, etc., etc. And always at least one yak on the racks and paddles in the back.

Oh, and the camper also has a minor library aboard, plenty of reference and/or reading material, even if it is only rarely applied to while "out there."

So now, other than hooking up the camper, what do I loathe to forget?

1. 20x 80 spotting scope and tripod. (Bird books and binos live in the truck)
2. Extra ice chest, especially if I'm headed for good fishin' territory.
3. The ol' laptop. I like to keep a long-winded diary in case I want to write a book someday. Also guarantees I can take as many pictures as my little heart desires. No on-the-road internet capability yet, though looking forward to it...
4. Don't forget the digital camera!
5. Chargers for cam and phone batt's.

Man, after giving the question a lot of thought, and then typing it out, I feel like I've really got it made in the shade!

One last note: I only have half a dozen or so states that I haven't visited yet, and TEXAS is still my FAVORITE! As much as I love to travel, I always love coming home best of all. Doesn't get any better'n that!

Re: What five things do you like to have when...

Depending on how close my truck is to the campsite:

Aside from above: digital camera, laptop, repellent...

Tent-camping:
1) Folding metal queen size air mattress stand.
2) Futon mattress in place of air-mattress.
(1 and 2 get me off the ground and on a mattress that feels like home.)
3) Inverter
4) A fan in warmer seasons
5)LOTS of rope.

Re: What five things do you like to have when...

Well, y'all have pretty much covered it all! What can I add to the list...let'see...
First and foremost, my Imitrex for migraines. It doesn't matter what the view is; if I have a migraine, I simply could not care less.
2)puzzle book (not just crosswords but an assortment) and 2 good pencils
3)bird seed to attract feathered friends
4)small clip on flashlight
5)clothesline and pins

Re: What five things do you like to have when...

Oh boy, you ain't kiddin', river... don't forget the head med. I've suffered chronic headaches since I was a kid, but by now it's second nature to pack the ol' horse pills.

I've also suffered a lifetime of friends who remind me that it's only poetic justice... that a head like mine, that causes so much suffering for anyone who sees it, ought to at least hurt its owner too once in a while. I hate to admit it, but it still cracks me up whenever anyone cares enough to say so...

Cheers, Kurt
