We need a place to go set up camp within a few hours of Dallas in October. Any ideas?

Mineral Wells
Caddo Lakes
Lake Whitney

(You can also do a search on here for a certain mile radius from Dallas).

I didn't realize that. What tools do you use? (I'm new.)

From the home page look in upper left under "Find a Texas Park" you click on that link which list them all. In upper right of that screenclick on search again to narrow your search. As an alternative try this link http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/
A lot of nice places within a short drive of the DFW metromess. All depends on what you are looking for. Give us some guidelines and the folks here will provide some recommendations, sometimes down to a specific site at a given park.

What's been mentioned plus anything in the Texas Hill Country. Tyler or Purtis Creek SP's would both be great choices. What are your interests?

Happy Camping!

Sites by large lake: Ray Roberts (Isle du Boise and Johnson), Whitney, Tawakoni, Possum Kingdom, Fairfield, Cooper
Smaller lakes: Tyler (beautiful), Purtis Creek (good fishing), Mineral Wells, Cleburne, Meridian, Fort Parker
Others: Dinosaur valley (cedar brake country, river and dino tracks)
As you can tell in a short drive from anywhere in DFW you can be deep in the tall pines of East Texas or the top of the hill country. Your choice

We prefer a place that's not crowded, quiet, LOTS of trees/shade, lake without speedboats & jetskis, hiking trails, hills/mountains, COOL (wishful thinking), level sites for a tent, picnic tables, private sites that aren't right on top of your neighbor... pretty much the perfect campground.

Purtis Creek SP. Little south of Canton. Small lake with great fishing. 50 boat limit on the lake and I believe there is a speed limit. Nice sites. I believe that this is the one for you.

Happy Camping!

For a little closer try Cooper Lake South Sulpher unit, nice beach, trails, fishing piers and ramps, shade nice restrooms, quiet but close (2 hours from Plano)
