Question Thanksgiving camping in Martin Dies SP

Has anyone done it. How are the screened shelters there. We usually camp in a tent or a RV. We've never camped in the fall before. Only in the summer months. Is there anything different to expect or that we need to be prepared for besides the cold. Also , how crowded is it? I'd like something semi-private. That's the reason for this trip if it actually happens is to get away from the crowds.

Thanks

I think a lot of people will be doing just as you are----trying one last camping trip before the heavy winter sets in. Take a look at Lake Houston State Park in New Caney. It's not that developed and not that well known. It also has a very nice hiking trail system. I don't believe it has screened shelters.

I can attest to the campers coming out of the woodwork. We were swamped with fellow campers (30 or more teenagers and a very few chaperones from Hudson ISD) last Wednesday and Thursday at Enchanted Rock SNA. If that's what mid-week camping is like, I have to rule out weekend and holiday camping there (until we get into camping at the hike-in primitive sites the State Parks offer).

Even E-Rock's primitive camping becomes metropolitan during the busy seasons. It is a very popular park, and it seems to be extremely popular with group outings and scout outings. I have been out to E-Rock about 8 times, I can only think of once that I had solitude in the backcountry - and it was a rainy weekday.

Martin Dies State Park is usually full on T-day. Wew have a trailer and hane been there many times including one t-day. If you want solitude maybe a smaller park...Mission Tejas...Fort Parker or something further from the big cities.

6 years ago we were loners when camping on holidays???? What happened?

Re: Thanksgiving camping in Martin Dies SP

Thanks fot the replies. My wife is the one who suggested Martin Dies SP. We have only been there once during the summer, but would like to try it in the fall. Thanksgiving seemed like a good time. I saw Tejas, but had never heard of it. What's it like? I trying to convice her into getting a screened shelter. Right now she wants to hold off to see if her Parents are going. They have a 5th wheel and will want us to bunk in w/ them.

Whispering: Personally, inviting ones parents kinda defeats the purpose of going camping by ourselves for the weekend w/ only our 2 daughters and having the chance toget away from the city and re-conecting w/ my familly. No work, no school, no tv, no ringing phone... Just us, together.

Re: Thanksgiving camping in Martin Dies SP

Well, I took the dive. Made reservations for T-day weekend. I was kinda suprised at how many sites were available. I wonder how accurate the on-line availablity is. Out of 20 screen shelter sites, it showed 13 of them as available. Hopfully it won't be much more crowded than that.

By the way. Does the shelter sites have electricity? I've never stayed in one before and I can't find that info on the Park's website.

Thanks.
