Tent camping in Texas?

Hello all, I am looking for a Camping ground in Texas that is really remote. I would like to hike for a few hundred yards before setting up a tent next to some water. I would also like for there to be hardly any people in the surrounding area. Ideally we would really like to "Rough" it. Any help you guys would give would be awesome. Thanks again, Jonathan. jc1153_chandler@yahoo.com

Jonathan,

Welcome to Wild Texas. I'd love to give you some good suggestions that fit your description, but really, I don't think any state except Alaska can offer you "really remote", "rough it" camping that involves only a few hundred yard's walk before you make camp. If you can get a few hundred yards in, so can the masses. Hence, not "remote", not "wild" and often not even remotely "nature/outdoors" due to car stereos and the like.

I have suggestions if you're willing to hike 2 or more miles into a park, but otherwise, your best bet is to try and camp when no one else is... at least then you'd be among other "hard core" campers and unlikely to have to deal with radios, boom boxes, etc.

What you're asking for are the amenities of a backpacker's destination campsite for the effort expenditure of a car camper.
In primetime camping season, it aint gonna happen.

Shannon's respone was dead center.

Do you GPS? If so, try boondockering.org. It can be hard to find peace and quiet. The LCRA parks on Lake Travis would be my suggestion.

If you want to rough it, go to Big Bend or South Padre Island. The national park and national seashore are some of the last wild Texascapes.

Re: Tent camping in Texas?

You could probably accomplish this by using one of the roads that cut through the 4c trail in the Davey Crockett N.Forest.
Pond camp has a road near it and like the name says has a small pond. You would have to get a map and do a little homework. They say the Rangers are very helpful?

I recommend Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park (just west of Big Bend near Lajitas) or Black Gap Wildlife Management Area (near Big Bend).

Big Bend National Park is very crowded during Spring Break, so do not go there during that time if you want isolation and remoteness. During the Spring and Fall, it is less crowded and during the summer months there are few people. There are many remote campsites along River Road East or River Road West, Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road that will fill the bill for remoteness. One caution -- traveling along River Road East/West and Old Ore Road are best accomplished with a high clearance 4WD. Black Gap Road is high clearance 4WD required.

Big Bend Ranch State Park and Black Gap Wildlife Management Area are pretty empty all of the time and are designed for those who really want to rough it.

I think you meant Padre Island National Seashore which is the north island. South Padre Island is over developed and crowded.
