Tent camping near Austin

Hi everyone,
I have recently moved to Austin and looking to go tent camping this weekend. I was wondering where the "best" places nearby are. I'm not looking for anywhere too physically exhausting... just a good combination of relaxing and fun. A lake or river nearby is preferrable. I was also wondering if any campsites have canoe rentals nearby.
Also, it has been quite sometime since I have been camping so I am starting from scratch with my gear. Can anyone recommend decent quality camping gear to someone on a budget?
I appreciate all help and information! Thanks!

Welcome. Head to wal-mart. They have some great tent "packages". Take easy way out with the food, just don't cook, make it all cooler food. Try Mc Kinney falls, on the south side of Austin. I-35 exit William Cannon, the HEB is right on the corner. There is hiking and water for wading/swimming, and fishing. Great place for a first timer, real close to town, but far enough away to feel secluded. Have a great time.

McKinney Falls gets my nod also. It is close to town, and still gives you the outdoors feeling. Plenty of wildlife and I'm not talking humans. Bastrop State park is just down the road. It will give you the east Texas feel with the pine trees and yaupons. Both are close and tent camper friendly.
