Tent Camping + Dog swimming

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a place where you can camp (tent) that allows your dog to swim. I just found out that it is prohibited in all state parks. They advised that you can bring your dog, but can not let it in the water. We haven't taken our dog (golden retriever) camping before but she loves to swim. Just wandering if anyone had any suggestions on places to go. We always keep her on a leash and clean up after her. If there is a place with some decent fishing as well, that would be icing on the cake. Will be traveling from Houston and willing to travel up to 3 or 4 hours (away from the coast, don't want to play with gators). Thanks in advance, and I am glad I found this site. Already picked up a ton of info.

Try the Corps of Engineers lakes. Most have nice tent camping areas with no such restrictions (at least in the less-developed parks).

I always have my dog with me when I am camping. I haven't had any trouble at any state parks with my lab. As long as the dog is on a leash, things are ok. She goes swimming along with the rest of the family.

Re: Tent Camping + Dog swimming

On our most recent trip to Inks our dog jumped right in and had a great time! She was on her leash of course, and no one even gave us a second look about her. We saw other dogs enjoying the water too. As a matter of fact, when we checked in, we were reminded of the leash rule, but no one mentioned anything about not going in the water.

I think I'll pretend I didn't hear about this rule, you know...the ol' "ask for forgiveness, not permission" routine and continue to take and enjoy my water dog!

Our dog hates the water with a passion, so for us, this is a non-issue.

LCRA parks on the Colorado River

It is so hot, are you sure you want to tent camp?
