just moved back into the DFW area and looking to camp spring break weekend with the in-laws. Any recommendations for tent camping (pref water & elec also) between Fort Worth area & San Antonio?? Also, am I the only one having trouble with the Austin reservation phone line?? Geez....how frustrating!!!

As bad as the phone reservation system is, its better than the online ireservations which are still not up entirely call on Thursdays they seem better lately.

Dinosaur Valley SP and Cleburne SP are both near Ft. Worth also recommend Ft. Richardson SP north of I 20.
Austin way has lots of sites like Inks Lake SP.

Mother Neff state park is supposed to reopen on the 1st of March, they have tent facilities with water and electricity and is almost exactly halfway between DFW and San Antonio.

I have also been to Lake Whitney a couple of times, the lake and the State Park there are really nice.

bt FW and SA covers a lot of ground. If I were you, take 35 South to the 67, head over and catch 281 South, then look for Johnson City. Pedernales Falls is a GREAT SP for tent camping. Tons of wildlife.

Course if you want cougars, you have to hit Friederich Park in SA. hehe

Thanks for all the input......anyone have any reviews of Cleburne SP? My in-laws are leaning toward that park. I REALLY wanted Pedernales Falls (sp??), but maybe next time!! We are looking for good biking trails....med in difficulty.

Cleburne is ok, look for posts by Turnkey, they go there often here is one but not info on the park. I know he has more out there use the search box Cleburne SP (Up-Date)

If you want a longer ride should consider Ft. Richardson. you go around the lake. It is north of I-20

Here's the one for Cleburne SP. Nice quiet park and very conveniet for us. There are other larger and nicer parks but this one works very well for weekend get-aways. Hope the review helps.

You won't be able to camp there, but for mountain biking in the San Antonio area I highly recommend Government Canyon SNA. For even more challenging trails, and fewer people, you can take the bikes to Hill Country State Natural Area in Bandera, TX. You can camp overnight at this park, but it is kept in a natural state as much as possible (hence it being a State Natural Area vs. a State Park) so there's no potable (drinking) water, no restrooms, etc. I've camped there many times, though not recently. I've mountain biked at both parks and enjoyed them equally. I was never a hard core mountain biker but there were tracks challenging to all levels of riders at both parks. You will be sharing the trails with backpackers, day hikers and equestrians at Hill Country SNA, and the same is true of Government Canyon (except for the equestrians).
